TESOL Now Chapter 10 Assignment
1. Practice doing the informational interview. Follow the guidelines for informational
interviewing given in this book. Be able to show the whole class how an informational
interview should be done.
Before actually, going out on one, I would do my "homework"; which means I'd
research
the top companies that offer TESOL courses. Perhaps shortlist them down to a dozen
companies, I will also ask friends around if they could refer me to a key person, and
once I found any, I would give him or a call I would sayin thebest phone friendly tone:
Good morning. My name is Yang Suji. May I speak with Ms. [Name], please?
If the person on the other lines says that that person is not available, or I feel does not
want to talk to me, I won’t give up and ask for another time that’s ok for both of us to
talk. That way, I’m letting the other person feel my interest in working for them Ibelieve
that as a job seeker, I have to be persistent - an important quality even for a TESOL
teacher.
I will conduct the informational interview as if it were a pleasant conversation I will ask
some probing questions like:
● Thank you for taking the time to meet me today. I am studying TESOL now, and I
would love to hear about your experience as an ESL teacher. First, could you tell me
what you usually do as an ESL teacher?
● Also, what do you enjoy most about your work?
● I see. What is one challenge you often face in your job?
● Are you comfortable with your compensation?
● Thank you for sharing. What skills do you think are most important to do well in this
● work?
Before the interview’s end, I would say:
Thank you for taking the time to grant me an opportunity to talk to you today. What
I learned today is valuable input for the resume I’m about to craft. Thank you so
much again for your time. I really appreciate all your answers.
2. Now, it’s time to do some Internet search. Look for at least two samples of a cover
letter, resume, thank-you letter, and reference page. Print these samples. With your
partner, examine these samples using the knowledge that that you have regarding these
documents. Do they conform to what is stated in the reading? Write down the features
TESOL Now Chapter 10 Assignment
that are lacking and the new features that you have found. Be able to share your work
with the whole class.
Cover Letter

sample 2 - https://novoresume.com/career-blog/cover-letter-examples
lacking: Some cover letters are too general and do not clearly explain why the applicant
is a good fit for that specific job.
new: Many samples start with a strong and attention-grabbing first paragraph, often
mentioning the company name and showing real excitement. The format also looks
more modern now, with short and clean paragraphs instead of long blocks of text.
Resume
sample 1 - https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/resume-samples/teacher
sample 2 - https://cvcompiler.com/teacher-resume-examples
lacking: Some resumes do not use full sentences for responsibilities, only short phrases.
new: Many modern resumes have a short “Profile” or “Summary” section at the top,
which gives a quick introduction about the candidate.
Thank-you Letter
sample 1 - https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/interviewing/sample-thank-you-letter-after-interview
sample 2 - https://www.manchestercc.edu/wp-content/uploads/ThankYouLetterSamples.pdf

gratitude.
New: Many letters use a warm tone and include details about how the person helped.
Some also add a wish for future success.

New: Many samples add a second short paragraph mentioning excitement about joining
the team, which helps show enthusiasm.
3. It’s your turn to write your cover letter, resume, and reference page. Using the Internet
and the newspapers, choose a teaching advertisement that interests you. Then, write a
cover letter, resume, and reference page that respond to this job advertisement. Be
guided by what you have learned so far about these documents.
For writing resumes, use the following plan in order to organize the information that you

I noticed that some parts of my cover letter and resume were too short, so I added more
details to better show my skills and goals. I tried to keep my writing clear, but also make it
more complete and organized. I also corrected some spelling and grammar mistakes I found
while reviewing. I revised my work based on the scoring rubric and checked the format
again to make it look more professional before submitting.
