HYDROGEN IONS
Hydrogen (H) is the simplest atom with 1 proton, 1 electron and zero
neutrons.
When hydrogen loses an electron, it forms a hydrogen ion (H+) or a
proton.
pH SCALE
❏ The pH scale measures the concentration of H+ ions in substance
and it used to determine its acidity or alkalinity.
❏ The pH scale runs from 0 – 14.
❏ If a solution has a high concentration of H+ ions, it is acidic. If a
solution has a low concentration of H+ ions, it is alkaline.
pH SCALE
❏ A neutral solution has a pH of 7.
❏ An acidic solution has a pH less than 7.
❏ An alkaline solution has a pH more than 7.
pH INDICATORS
❏ The pH of a solution can be determined using various indicators
EFFECTS OF pH
❏ The structure of proteins can become degraded due to extreme pH levels.
❏ Wide deviations from the normal pH levels in aquatic areas, can kill the
plants and animals there.
❏ Too acidic or too alkaline drinking water can disrupt the normal body
functions.
❏ Plant growth can also be stunted by differences in the pH of soil they
grow in.
