The document discusses several aspects of the "hookup culture" prevalent on many college campuses. It describes how hookups, defined as physical encounters without commitment, have replaced traditional dating as the primary mode of initial sexual/romantic interactions among students. Alcohol is a major factor lowering inhibitions and enabling hookups. Dating norms have also evolved significantly over generations with less structured courtship and more focus on casual sex initially rather than commitment. Ultimately, most students still value traditional romantic relationships despite embracing hookup culture in college.

TED TALK: The Hook Up Culture, the Nature of Sex and Relationships in College 1.

) Hooking up There is a new meeting and mating ritual which has started most commonly among college students, and its called hooking up The practice of hooking up allows sexual interaction with little or no commitment and/or affection involved The term hook up is very vague, perhaps thats why its so commonly used Three fourths of respondents (in a study I researched) agreed that hooking up is when a girl and guy get together for a physical encounter and dont necessarily expect anything further Hooking up can refer to anything from kissing to sexual intercourse

2.) Alcohol and College Alcohol is a huge contributing factor in the hook up culture, and also a huge part of college life Its much easier to hook up with someone while drunk, or under some kid of influence Its also much easier to blame the hooking up on the drinking and/or drugs Some 70% of college kids say they had unplanned sex while under the influence, 20% didnt take precautions In a culture where sex and alcohol are constantly being mixed, no wonder its so hard to create meaningful monogamous relationships According to USA Today, most colleges and universities have significantly more women then men Women are often competing with each other for men, making their relationships with men become sexual much quicker When I asked my roommate in college why is that we are so likely to hook up with people rather than date them her response was, Its because we all get so f*cked up

3.) The Evolution of Dating Dating itself can show an evolution, a true historical change, the ideology of courtship has changed an obscene amount from the past Not too long ago (perhaps when our grandparents were our age) the term dating was easily defined. Dating was when young men and women planned on a social activity (usually initiated by the man)

4.) Choosing between a romantic and professional commitment

A date did not hold an expectation of any kind of physical action, although it could have been hoped for. Both men and women maybe went on 2-3 dates a week, with the underlying hope that they would find their future spouse, it could be comparable to shopping around If I remember high school correctly, it used to be you would date someone and it may or may not lead to something sexual. Now its something sexual happens and it may or may not lead to dating. In order to make things official or exclusive there must be a verbal agreement

Much of the reason for this hook up culture is simply not wanting the commitment People are pursuing much more at a younger age, saving marriage for once theyve accomplished more With the economy the way it is, and the competition for jobs after graduation, people will take whatever they can get Success and a career are put way ahead of romance http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0005061.html

5.) The Underlying American Value Though we all seem to accept this hook up culture, there is still that underlying typical American value. Movies like No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits are certainly clever in the sense where they appeal to a younger crowd by adding comedy and sex in replace of romance and sex. However, why do both movies end with the hook up buddies turning into a monogamous relationship?
