Version 1
Video editing task guide

The task guides show generic techniques but all the work is done using Windows Movie
Maker®. This application was chosen because it is likely to be the most widely available as it
is bundled or available as a free download in all versions of Windows. Windows Movie
Maker has all the tools and features necessary for all practical work for the exam
specification.

The techniques and skills learned using Movie Maker will be transferrable to other video
editing applications. Probably the only difficulty with using other applications will be finding
the tools and menu items in other workspaces.

Task 2
When working on this task it is advisable to save your work as a project as well as a movie.
The project file keeps discrete clips and this makes it easier to amend and add additional
features.

(1) Use the images in the Countdown_Files folder to create a countdown timer from 10 to 1.

The quickest way to load the files is to drag and drop them into Movie Maker. Find the source files
and select the numbers 1 to 10 only. You can drag and drop them one by one or all at once.

You can then use the ‘Time zoom’ controls to adjust the display of the clips.

(2) Ensure the numbers are in the correct sequence and each one is displayed for one
second.

As in task 1 you can select the clips

that are out of order and move them to
the correct place in the sequence.

All the clips are now in the correct order.

To make each one display for one second, on the ‘Home’ tab of the ribbon click the ‘Select
all’ icon.

Now that all the clips are selected, set the ‘Duration’ of each clip to one second.

(3) Add the Alarm.avi movie as a clip at the end of the movie.

Set the playhead to the end of the movie.

From the ‘Home’ tab click the ‘Add videos and photos’ icon.

Select the Alarm.avi file.

The alarm movie is added after
our countdown clips.

You can see that it is roughly 10

seconds long.

(4) Change the speed of the alarm clip so that it is five seconds long.

Use the ‘Speed’ control in the ‘Edit’ menu to

double the speed.

The alarm movie should now last only about

five seconds.

(5) Take a snapshot of the alarm clock.

Select the alarm movie clip and click the

‘Snapshot’ icon in the ‘Home’ tab ribbon.

A single frame snapshot from the alarm

movie will be added after the clip.

seconds.

‘Caption’ icon on the ‘Home’ tab ribbon.

You can then enter the text.

Make sure the snapshot is still

selected and display the
‘Format’ menu.

Set the duration to three

seconds.

(7) Add an effect to fade the snapshot to black.

Click the ‘Visual Effects’ tab and expand the options using the scroll controls to display the
‘Motions and Fades’ options.

the ‘Fade out to black’ icon.
