Problem Set 1

1. You create an open box from a square piece of material, 24 centimeters on a side. You cut
equal squares from the corners and turn up the sides.

(a) Draw and label a diagram that represents the box.

Length = (24 – 2x)

24 Width = (24 – 2x)
Height = x

x 24 – 2x x

(b) Verify that the volume V of the box is given by V = 4x(12-x)2

V= Length × Width × Height

V = (24 - 2x)(24 - 2x)(x)

V=x(24 - 2x)2

(24 - 2x) = 2(12 - x)

(24 - 2x)2 = [2(12−x)]2

V = x ⋅ 4 (12 - x)2
= 4(12−x)2
V = 4x(12 - x)2

and observe the behavior of the function as approaches 4. Use the table to find lim 𝑉
(c) The box has a maximum volume when Use a graphing utility to complete the table

For #’s 2 & 3, complete the table and use the result to estimate the limit numerically.
Determine whether the limit can be reached.

In #’s 4–6, use the graph to find the limit (if it exists). If the limit does
not exist, explain why.

4.

EXPLANATION:
As x approaches -2 from the left, the function approaches -1.
As x approaches -2 from the right, the function
approaches 1.
Since the left-hand limit and right-hand limit are not
equal, the limit does not exist.

5.

EXPLANATION:
As x approaches 1 from the left, the function
values tend to -∞.
As x approaches 1 from the right, the function values
tend to +∞.
Since the left-hand limit and right-hand limit
differ and go to infinity in opposite directions,
the limit does not exist.

6.

EXPLANATION:
Near x=0, the function oscillates rapidly between -2 and 2.
There is no single value that the function approaches.
Therefore, the limit does not exist due to oscillation.

(c) lim [f(x)g(x)] (d) lim [g(x)-f(x)]

8. Find the limit by direct substitution.
