Department’s Mission
Main motto of any laboratory/Practical/field work is for enhancing required skills as well as
creating ability amongst students to solve real time problem by developing relevant competencies
in psychomotor domain. By keeping in view, GTU has designed competency focused outcome-
based curriculum - 2021 (COGC-2021) for engineering diploma program. In that more time
allotted to practical work than theory. It shows importance of enhancement of skills amongst
students, and it pays attention to utilize every second of time allotted for practical amongst
students, instructors and Lecturers to achieve relevant outcomes by performing rather than writing
practice in study type. It is must for effective implementation of competency focused outcome-
based green curriculum-2021, every practical has been keenly designed to serve as a tool to
develop & enhance relevant industry needed competency in each and every student. These
psychomotor skills are very difficult to develop through traditional chalk and board content
delivery method in the classroom. Accordingly, this lab manual designed to focus on the industry
defined relevant outcomes, rather than old practice of conducting practical to prove concept and
theory.
By using this lab manual students can read procedure one day advance before actual performance
day of practical experiment which creates interest and also, they have idea of judgment of
magnitude prior to performance. This in turn enhances pre-determined outcomes amongst students.
Each and every experiment /Practical in this manual begins by competency, industry relevant
skills, course outcomes as well as practical outcomes which serve as a key role for doing the
practical. The students will also achieve safety and necessary precautions to be taken while
performing practical.
This manual also provides guidelines to lecturers to facilitate student-centered lab activities
through each practical/experiment by arranging and managing necessary resources in order that the
students follow the procedures with required safety and necessary precautions to achieve outcomes.
It also gives an idea that how students will be assessed by providing Rubrics.

Given work piece like gear, mechanical job with thread.

Systems.
CO-4 Select appropriate non – conventional machining method for different machining operations.
1. Handle components and equipment carefully with safety and necessary precaution.
The job gets rotation (and power) from the motor through the belt-pulley, clutch and then the speed
gear box which splits the input speed into a number (here 12) of speeds by operating the cluster
gears. The cutting tool derives its automatic feed motion(s) from the rotation of the spindle via the
gear quadrant, feed gear box and then the apron mechanism where the rotation of the feed rod is
transmitted.
Manufacturing Engineering Process-III 4351902
- Either t o t h e p i n i o n w h i c h being rolled along the rack provides the longitudinal feed
- or to the screw of the cross slide for cross or transverse feed.
While cutting screw threads the half nuts are engaged with the rotating lead screw to
positively cause travel of the carriage and hence the tool parallel to the lathe bed i.e., job axis.
The feed-rate for both turning and threading is varied as needed by operating the Norton gear
and the Meander drive systems existing in the feed gear box (FGR). The range of feeds can be
augmented by changing the gear ratio in the gear quadrant connecting the FGB with the spindle
As and when required, the tailstock is shifted along the lathe bed by operating the clamping bolt
and the tailstock quill is moved forward or backward or is kept locked in the desired location.
The versatility or working range of the center lathe is augmented by using several attachments
like
- Taper turning attachment
- Thread milling attachment
- Copying attachment

4.10 Procedure
The gear blank is held between the dividing head and tailstock using a mandrel.
The cutter is mounted on the arbor and the cutter is centered accurately with the gear blank
Set the speed and feed for machining. For giving depth of cut, the table is raised till the periphery of
the gear blank just touches the cutter
The Micrometer dial of vertical feed screw is set to zero at this position. Then the table is raised
further to give the required depth of cut
The machine is started and feed is given to the table to cut the first groove of the blank.
After the cut, the table is brought back to the starting position. Then the gear blank is indexed for
the next tooth space. This is continued till all the teeth are cut
Dimensions of the gear teeth profile are checked using the gear tooth Venire.

1. Axis of a thread: This is an imaginary line running longitudinally through the center of the screw.
2. Crest: Crest of the thread is the top most surface joining the two sides.
3. Root: Root of the thread is the bottom of the groove between the two flanks.
4. Flank: Flank of thread are straight edges which connect the crest with the root of the thread.
5. Pitch: Pitch of a thread is the distance measured parallel to the axis from a point on a thread to the
corresponding points on adjacent thread forms in the same axial plane and on the same side of the
axis.
6. Depth of thread: Depth of a thread is the distance between the crest and root of the thread.
7. Major diameter: It is an imaginary largest diameter of the thread which would touch the crests of an

triple start thread will have a lead distance three times longer than a single start thread of the same
pitch, and so on...

4. Do the facing operation by giving cross feed to the cross slide and reduce the length.
5. Do the turning operation by giving longitudinal feed to the carriage and reduce the length.
6. Two or three pass can be given for the turning operation.
7. Remove the work piece and hold in chuck on the other side and do the turning operation for the
remaining work piece.
8. Engage the back gear mechanism to reduce the speed of the work piece.
9. Check the pitch required, calculate the tumbler gear, and engage it with head stock.
10. Move the carriage towards tail stock and make a mark on the dial.
11. Give small depth of cut and engage the half nut so that the carriage will move automatically
towards head stock and cut the v-thread on the work piece.
12. After reaching the required length of thread, release the tool by rotating cross slide in opposite to
the depth of cut by counting the number of rotation.
13. Move the carriage towards tail stock, give depth of cut and engage the half nut.
14. Repeat the procedure to produce complete form of v-thread. After finishing remove the work piece
from the chuck.

Manufacturing Engineering Process-III 4351902
6.10 Procedure:
Creating a cube using rapid prototyping methods, such as 3D printing, involves a relatively simple
process due to the cube's basic geometric shape. Here's a step-by-step procedure to create a 3D-printed
cube:
Start a new project and select the appropriate units for measurement (e.g., millimeters, inches).
Create a cube by drawing a square shape and extruding it to the desired height. The length, width, and
height of the cube should be equal.
Confirm that the dimensions of the cube match your desired size.
Add any additional features if necessary, such as fillets, chamfer, or surface textures.
Export the 3D model as an STL file, the standard format for 3D printing.
Open your preferred slicing software (e.g., Cura, PrusaSlicer) and import the STL file.
Position the cube on the virtual print bed, and adjust its orientation if needed.
Manufacturing Engineering Process-III 4351902
Configure printing settings, such as layer height, infill percentage, and support structures. Since the
cube is a simple shape, you won't need extensive settings.
Load the filament of your choice (typically PLA for beginners) into the printer's extruder.
Step 5: Printing
Load the sliced G-code file (generated by the slicing software) onto the 3D printer via USB, SD card,
or network connection.
Start the printing process and monitor the progress. The printer will create layers one by one, gradually
building up the cube.
Step 6: Post-Processing
Once the 3D printer completes the printing process, carefully remove the cube from the print bed. Use
a spatula or scraper if necessary.
Inspect the cube for any defects, rough edges, or imperfections. Sand or trim any excess material if
needed.
