Engineering Mechanics: CE11001 TUTORIAL - 2

Autumn Semester Maximum Points: 100
Week-2 Time Limit: NA

This tutorial contains 6 pages and 15 problems. Check to see if any pages are missing. Following rules
apply:
• You are allowed any books or notes. Use of scientific calculator is permitted.
• Not all questions will be solved in the class. It is expected that you will solve the questions on
your own.
• Assume appropriate values/relations wherever necessary and mention in your answer script.
• Organize your work, in a reasonably neat and coherent way, in the answer script. Work scattered
all over the page without a clear ordering will not be evaluated.
• Wherever required explain mathematically. No amount of verbal reasoning would suffice.

1. (Answer: x = 9.81 m points) The towline exerts a force of P = 6 kN at the end of the 8-m-long crane
boom. If θ = 30◦ , determine the placement x of the hook at B so that this force creates a maximum
moment about point O. What is this moment?

Figure 1: Structure for Question 1.

2. (Answer: Moment = -3.36 kNm, α = 90◦ , β = 90◦ , γ = 180◦ points) The 20-N horizontal force acts on
the handle of the socket wrench. What is the moment of this force about point B. Specify the
coordinate direction angles α, β and γ of the moment axis.

3. (Answer: r = 13.3 mm points) Old clocks were constructed using a fusee B to drive the gears and
watch hands. The purpose of the fusee is to increase the leverage developed by the mainspring as it
uncoils and thereby loses some of its tension. The mainspring can develop a torque (moment) Ts = kθ,
where k = 0.015 Nm/rad is the torsional stiffness and θ is the angle of twist of the spring in radians. If
the torque Tf developed by the fusee is to remain constant as the mainspring winds down and x = 10
mm when θ = 4 rad, determine the required radius of the fusee when θ = 3 rad.

4. (Answer: MP = (−24i + 24j + 8k) kNm points) Determine the moment of the force F about point P .
Express the result as a Cartesian vector.

Figure 4: Structure for Question 4.

5. (Answer: MA = (574i + 350j + 1385k) Nm points) Determine the moment of the force of F = 600 N
about point A.

Figure 5: Structure for Question 5.

6. (Answer: MA = (1.00i + 0.750j − 1.560k) kNm points) The force F acts perpendicular to the inclined
plane. Determine the moment produced by F about point B. Express the result as a Cartesian vector.

Figure 6: Structure for Question 6.

7. (Answer: Fa = 692.82 N, Fb = 346.42 N points) A 600 N force applied to the bracket at A is to be

replaced by two forces, Fa in the a − a direction and Fb in the b − b direction. Both these will together
produce the same effect on the bracket as that of the 600 N force. Determine Fa and Fb .

8. ( points) [Answer: F (2 sin φ−1)(i√cos θ+j sin θ)+2 cos φk

5−4 sin φ
] A force F is applied to the surface of a sphere as
shown. The angles θ and φ locate point P , and point M is the midpoint of ON . Express F in vector
form using the x-y-z coordinates.

Figure 8: Structure for Question 8.

9. (Answer: Ma = 4.37 Nm, α = 33.7◦ , β = 90◦ , γ = 56.3◦ , Mmax = 5.41 Nm points) The force of F = 30N
acts on the bracket as shown. Determine the moment of the force about the a − a axis of the pipe if
α = 60◦ , β = 60◦ , γ = 45◦ . Also, determine the coordinate direction angles of F in order to produce
the maximum moment about the a − a axis. What is this moment?

triangular block is to be zero, determine the magnitude of forces F and P .

11. (Answer: FR = 365 N MO = 2364 Nm points) Replace the force system by an equivalent resultant
force and couple moment at point O.

equivalent resultant force and couple moment at point A.

does this act, measured from end A.
