Design for Additive

Manufacturing
Design for Additive Manufacturing

Common to most of the techniques is the layer-by-layer approach, which is used during

manufacturing. Design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) is a term that has its origin in the

term design for manufacturing (DfM), which means designing a part or a product for easy

manufacturing (Boothroyd, 1994)

Additive for Results
Poorly-deployed Additive Well -deployed Additive
• A “replacement” for traditional • A new tool for improving
processes – CNC, Lathe, drill manufacturing aid functionality
press and cost
• Unmanaged preventative • Regular preventative
maintenance maintenance, product portfolio,
• Limited access…. and utilization reviews
• …. to printer understanding • An agitator and expediter in
• …. To machine access product development process.
• Underdeveloped DFAM skills • Proliferated, managed DFAM skills
Additive for Results
Clarifying “Design” in DFAM mean in this case?
In general, the value added by DFAM will be highest when there’s the greatest level of
design freedom.
“Design for FDM” within DFAM
FDM is one of the most widely-adopted 3D printing technology in world…
…… but not all design for FDM techniques apply to all other technologies.
Primary Benefits of DFAM
DFAM Principle
#1. Think Additively Benefits
• Most manufacturing methods are “subtractive”
• Least material removed means most cost Weight & Cost
Reduction
effective
• The opposite describes additive
Print Time
• The less a material used yields cost and time Reduction
savings.
• Add strength features (ribs, fillets) without added Strength
tooling costs. Enhancement
