“How does the information in the listening passage add to what is explained in the
reading passage”. Biz de 20 sn.hazırlık yapıp, 60 saniye speaking yapıyoruz.

Q4. ANNOUNCEMENT (READING)

Great Ape Communication
Quite a few scientific studies have been conducted on communication by the great
apes, a group of primates composed of gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans.
What has been concluded in these studies is that the great apes communicate in a
variety of ways that include, but are not limited to, facial expressions, gestures with
their appendages, and a variety of calls. The large primates use this wide variety of
methods for communication to express a broad range of awareness to other
members of their group, such as anger, fear, approaching danger, dominance over
the group, or even acceptance of members into that group.
Q 4. TRANSCRIPT OF THE LISTENING FILE
Page 501, Question 4. Now listen to the conversation on a piece of paper. Take
notes on the main points of the listening passage.
I'm sure you understand from the text that the great apes are able to communicate
in a variety of ways within their species. I'd like to talk now about what studies have
shown to be some of the limitations to their communication, in particular in two
ways, referred to as a lack of displacement and a lack of productivity. First, about a
lack of displacement in terms of communication…. a lack of displacement means
that the great apes communicate only about things that are immediately present to
them. They do not communicate about things that are not physically present. For
example, they can't communicate about tomorrow's weather. This inability to
communicate about things that aren't within range of their senses is called lack of
displacement. Now let me talk about lack of productivity in terms of
communication. A lack of productivity is an inability to manipulate communication
to combine gestures and sounds, or use both in different ways to create new
meanings. Humans, for example, can combine facial expressions with words to
create meanings different from each expression or word by itself. Because the great
apes do not manipulate their sounds and gestures to create new meanings, they're
said to have a lack of productivity in their communication.
Now answer the following question. You have 30 seconds to prepare an answer and
60 seconds to give your spoken response. “How does the information in the
listening passage add to what is explained in the reading passage”
SAMPLE NOTES:
SAMPLE SPEAKING RESPONSE:
The reading explains that great apes, like
gorillas and chimpanzees, use a variety of
methods to communicate, such as facial
expressions, gestures, and vocal calls.
These allow them to express emotions like
fear, anger, or acceptance within their
group.
However, the professor adds more
information by discussing the limitations of
ape communication. First, he talks about the
lack of displacement, meaning apes can only talk about what is happening
right now. For example, they can’t talk about future events like tomorrow’s
weather. Second, he explains the lack of productivity, which means they can’t
combine gestures and sounds in creative ways to make new meanings, like
humans do.
So, while the reading shows how apes can communicate in different ways, the
lecture explains that their communication is still limited compared to human
language.
