What is Optoelectronics?
Based on three major developments in optics in the last 50 years:
• Invention of the laser
• Fabrication of low-loss optical fibers
• Introduction of semiconductor optical devices
In general, refers to devices that are electronic in nature but involve light
(e.g. light-emitting diodes, liquid crystal displays, light detectors…)
Principles: physics, engineering, chemistry
Methods: experimental studies and theoretical modeling
Object: optoelectronic devices and systems
Optoelectronics studies:
• Optical properties of materials
• Device fabrication and packaging
• Devices for efficient light generation
• Effective light detection
• Low-loss light transmission
• Light modulation
• Light amplification
• Light frequency conversion
• Manipulation of basic light properties
• Optical data storage & processing
• Optical sensing
How we will study it?
• Light nature, properties and behavior
• diffraction
• interference
• polarization
• Basic optical laws
• refraction and reflection
• mirrors
• lenses
• Physics of light-matter interactions
• absorption
• emission
• generation

Academic Integrity
Students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the
highest ethical standards of the Profession of Engineering and evince
academic integrity in all their pursuits and activities at the university. As
such, in accordance with the General Academic Regulations and
Requirements of the University of Manitoba, Section 7.1, students are
reminded that “plagiarism or any other form of cheating in examinations,
assignments, laboratory reports or term tests is subject to serious
academic penalty (e.g. suspension or expulsion from the faculty or
university). A student found guilty of contributing to cheating in
examinations or term assignments is also subject to serious academic
penalty.”
Academic Integrity
• Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated.
• Plagiarism will be reported and acted upon.
• Please, for your own sake, don’t engage in
unprofessional conduct.
Laboratory works
Laboratory Wednesday 14:30 – 17:30
E3-554 (one every other week)
Starts on September 24
You will work in groups of 4-5
Everyone should have a complete record of a lab
For each group data will be the same
Lab reports, however, will be separate for each group
member and should be prepared individually
Laser Safety
Laboratory work Nr 5 uses a hazardous class 3B laser.
When working with ALL lasers in the lab:
• Avoid direct exposure of the eyes or skin to the
beam (or even reflected beam)
• Do not disassemble or remove laser enclousure/housing
• Do not point the beam to another person(s)
• Avoid wearing reflective jewelry, watches, etc.
You have to make familiar yourself with a laser safety information
package provided by EHSO at UofM:

Presentations
• Presentations are held during lectures
• The purpose is to inform yourself and the class about
the recent progress in optoelectronics research
• The topics will be selected by discussions between
student and instructor
• Presentation slides will be posted on the web
Next Lecture
September 8, Mon, 8:30 – 9:20, E2-365
