VCarve & CNC Machine Quick Reference

■■ VCarve (Software Knowledge)

• Basic Workflow: Import designs (DXF, SVG, STL), draw/edit vectors, set material size & datum.
• Toolpaths: Profile cuts, pockets, V-carving, drilling, 3D roughing/finishing, nesting.
• Tool Database: Define tools (end mill, ball nose, V-bit, drill), set feeds, speeds, step-over &
step-down.
• Preview & Simulation: Run previews to check depth & finish, catch errors before cutting.
• Export: Choose correct post-processor & save toolpaths as G-code.

■■ CNC Machine (Practical Knowledge)

• Machine Setup: Know axis (X,Y,Z), homing, zeroing material.
• Workholding: Clamps, vacuum table, screws, tape – secure stock properly.
• Tools & Bits: Types (straight, spiral, ball nose, V-bit, compression), tool changes, collet care.
• Feeds & Speeds: Feed rate, spindle RPM, step-down depth; match to bit & material.
• Safety: PPE (glasses, hearing protection), stay clear, know emergency stop location.
• Maintenance: Clean dust/chips, check belts/screws, lubricate, replace worn collets.

■ Extra to Impress in Interview

• Difference between 2D, 2.5D, and 3D toolpaths.
• How to avoid tool breakage (feeds/speeds, chip load).
• Cutting differences: MDF, plywood, acrylic, aluminum.
• Importance of test cuts & using a waste board.
• G-code basics: G0 (rapid), G1 (linear), M3 (spindle on).
