Lab 1: VM backup capabilities

Lab 1.2: Working with backup jobs for virtual machines

As the backup administrator, you have been tasked with creating backup jobs for the virtualized workloads. The requirements
from the Chief Information Officer (CIO) are as follows:
• Maximum data loss in time: 24 hours
• Backups must be kept on-site for: 14 days
• Confidential data must have a full backup produced every month and retained for 12 months on-site
• Virtual machine(s) with the Linux operating system must be manually selected
• Any virtual machine with the vSphere tag RPO-24H-RETENTION-14D must be included in backups without manual work
• Application consistency on all virtual machines with the vSphere tag RPO-24H-RETENTION-14D

e
• Highest priority for processing all virtual machines with the vSphere tag RPO-24H-RETENTION-14D
• Backup of Microsoft SQL Server transaction logs

ut
• Confidential data must be encrypted
Learning objectives covered in this exercise:
• Create, modify and delete a backup job
• Identify backup methods available

ib
Task 1: Create an encrypted Hyper-V backup job
1. In the bottom left corner of the window, navigate to the Home view (the icon looks like a house).

tr
2. On the Home ribbon, click the Backup Job.
3. Select Virtual machine.

is
4. Select Microsoft Hyper-V....
5. In the newly opened New Backup Job window, enter:
a. Name: Backup: Confidential data

D
b. Description: Confidential data that must be encrypted.
6. On the Name step, click the Next > button.
7. Click the Add... button.
8. In the newly opened Add Objects window, expand the hyperv01.vmce.lab host.
9. Select the HyperV-Tiny virtual machine.
or
Note: If no HyperV-Tiny virtual machine can be found, the most likely cause is you accidentally launched a new backup job
for VMware vSphere instead of Microsoft Hyper-V.
e
10. In the Add Objects window, click the Add button.
at

11. Back in the New Backup Job window, on the Virtual Machines step, click the Next > button.
Note: Every successful backup job session creates a new restore point that lets you roll back VM data to an earlier point in
time. To control the number of restore points in the backup chain, you must specify retention policy settings. The retention
lic

policy defines how many restore points you want to retain on disk and thus how 'far' you are able to roll back. After the allowed
number of restore points is exceeded, Veeam Backup & Replication automatically removes the earliest restore point from the
backup chain. There are two options:
up

Restore points: Veeam Backup & Replication keeps the last N restore points, where N is the specified number of restore
D

points.
ot

Days: Veeam Backup & Replication keeps restore points created during the last N days, where N is the specified number of
days.
N

The daily retention policy can be helpful if you periodically create off-schedule backups. For example, you create a daily backup
o

job and you want to store retention points for 14 calendar days. If you select 14 restore points and manually create off-
schedule backups, there will be several restore points in one day. So, you will have retention points for less than 14 days. In
D

this case, you can use the days option.

Important: To ensure that the requirement Backups must be kept on-site for: 14 days is met, we will modify the retention
policy from restore points to days and adjust days kept to 14.

12. Increase the Retention policy to: 14 days

Lab 1: VM backup capabilities

Important: To ensure the requirement Confidential data must have a full backup produced every month and retained for 12
months is met, we will enable the GFS retention policy and configure it to keep 12 monthly full backups.

13. Back in the New Backup Job window, tick the Keep certain full backups longer for archival purposes check box.
14. Click the Configure... button.
15. In the newly opened Configure GFS window, tick the Keep monthly full backups for: check box.
16. Increase Keep monthly full backups for: to: 12
Important: It is not required to enable weekly full backups to have monthly or yearly full backups when configuring GFS. If
you are wondering which full backup will be used for the monthly full, please ask your instructor to explain it at the end of this

e
lab exercise.

ut
17. In the Configure GFS window, click the OK button.
18. Back in the New Backup Job window, click the Advanced button.
Important: Veeam Backup & Replication provides the following methods (modes) for creating backup chains:

ib
tr
Reverse incremental: When the reverse incremental backup method is used, Veeam Backup & Replication creates a backup
chain that consists of the full backup file (VBK) and a set of reverse incremental backup files (VRBs) preceding it. This backup

is
method helps you save space on the backup storage because Veeam Backup & Replication stores only one full backup file (if
you do not schedule periodic full backups) and removes incremental backup files once the retention period is exceeded.

D
Forever forward incremental: When the forever forward incremental (FFI) backup method is used, Veeam Backup &

or
Replication creates a backup chain that consists of the first full backup file (VBK) and a set of forward incremental backup files
(VIBs) following it. This backup method helps you save space on the backup storage because Veeam Backup & Replication
stores only one full backup file and removes incremental backup files once the retention period is exceeded. To meet retention
policy settings, Veeam Backup & Replication injects data of an incremental file into the full backup file before deleting the
e
increment. Such transformations can lead to the fragmentation of the full backup file, and you have to schedule the compact of
at

full backup file operation. This operation produces additional I/O load on the backup storage. Overall, the FFI method produces
the medium I/O impact on the storage compared to other backup methods.
lic

Forward incremental: When the forward incremental (FI) backup method is used, Veeam Backup & Replication creates a
backup chain that consists of multiple full backup files (VBKs) and sets of forward incremental backup files (VIBs) following each
up

full backup file. Full backups can be created using synthetic full and/or active full method. By doing regular full backups, the
backup chain is split into shorter series. This lowers the chances of losing the backup chain completely and makes this backup
method the most reliable. This backup method requires more storage space than other methods because the backup chains
D

contains multiple full backup files and sometimes Veeam Backup & Replication stores more restore points than specified in the
retention policy settings due to the specifics of the FI retention policy. The FI backup method produces the lowest I/O impact
on the backup storage. However, the impact on the backup storage increases on days when synthetic full backups are
ot

scheduled, and impact on the production storage increases on days when active full backups are scheduled.

19. In the newly opened Advanced Settings window, select the Reverse incremental (slower) radio button.
N

20. Click the Storage tab.

Important: To ensure the requirement Confidential data must be encrypted is met, we will enable the Enable backup file
o

encryption option and configure it with a secure password.

21. Tick the Enable backup file encryption check box.

D

22. In the Encryption section, click the Add... button.

23. In the newly opened Password window, enter:
a. Hint: Instructor-led technical training providing extensive information on Veeam solutions
b. Password: vmce
Note: It is strongly recommended that you provide a meaningful hint that will help you recall the password. The password hint
is displayed when you import an encrypted file to the Veeam backup server and access it.

24. In the Password window, click the OK button.

Lab 1: VM backup capabilities

25. In the newly opened Veeam Backup and Replication window, click the OK button to acknowledge configuration
backup has been disabled.
Important: Currently, configuration backup does not have encryption enabled. Because you just enabled encryption for a job,
configuration backup has been disabled until you enable the encryption of configuration backup. If even one job has encryption
enabled, configuration backup will not be performed unless it also has encryption enabled. This is due to security risks.

26. Back in the Advanced Settings window, verify the encryption password hint is displayed then click the OK button.
27. On the Storage step, click the Next > button (this will cause an expected error to appear).

e
Important: An expected error will appear: GFS retention is not compatible with the reverse incremental backup
mode.

ut
28. In the newly opened Veeam Backup and Replication window, click the OK button.
29. Click the Advanced button.
30. In the newly opened Advanced Settings window, select the Incremental (recommended) radio button.

ib
31. Untick the Create synthetic full backups periodically check box.
32. In the Advanced Settings window, click the OK button.
33. Back in the New Backup Job window, notice an exclamation mark is displayed next to the Keep certain full backups

tr
longer for archival purposes option.
34. Point the mouse cursor at the yellow triangle icon to display the warning.

is
Important: The tool tip warning text should read: Enable periodic fulls, or schedule a script to create them. Because GFS
retention is enabled, periodical full backups must be produced, otherwise we will not be able to meet the requirement of

D
keeping one full backup every month for 12 months.

35. Click the Advanced button.

36. In the newly opened Advanced Settings window, tick the Create synthetic full backups periodically check box.
37.
38.

39.
In the Advanced Settings window, click the OK button.
or
Back in the New Backup Job window, on the Storage step, confirm the exclamation mark is gone then click the Next
> button.
On the Guest Processing step, keep the default settings and click the Next > button.
e
Note: As HyperV-Tiny is a DOS-based server we will not enable application-aware processing.
at

Important: To ensure the requirement Maximum data loss in time: 24 hours is met, we will configure the job to run
automatically with the default selection of daily at this time and Everyday to ensure that the job runs every 24 hours.
lic

40. At the top of the window, tick the Run this job automatically check box.
41. On the Schedule step, click the Apply button.
42. Tick the Run the job when I click Finish check box.
43. On the Summary step, click the Finish button.
up

up

Important: When producing agent backups, the backup method can either be forever forward incremental or forward
incremental with either periodical active full backups or periodical synthetic full backups.
D

In some cases, you need to regularly create a full backup. For example, your corporate backup policy may require that you
create a full backup on the weekend and run incremental backup on work days. To let you conform to these requirements,
Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows lets you create active full backups.
ot

In some situations, running active full backups periodically may not be an option. Active full backups are resource-intensive and
consume considerable amount of network bandwidth. As an alternative, you can create synthetic full backups. In terms of data,
N

the synthetic full backup is identical to a regular full backup. Synthetic full backup produces a VBK file that contains all data that
you have chosen to back up.
o

The synthetic full backup has a number of advantages:

D

- The synthetic full backup does not use network resources: it is created from backup files you already have on the target
location.

- The synthetic full backup produces less load on the production environment: it is synthesized right on the target location.

Lab 3.1: Prepare Veeam infrastructure for file share backups

As the backup administrator, you have been tasked with deploying additional Veeam components required for creating file
share backups and adding the file share to Veeam Backup & Replication so they can be used in file share backup jobs.
Learning objectives covered in this exercise:
• Configure your installation for your environment

Task 1: Deploy required Veeam components for creating file share backups
A cache repository is a storage location where Veeam Backup & Replication keeps temporary metadata and uses it to reduce
the load on the file share during the backup procedure. The cache repository keeps track of all objects that have changed

e
between each backup session. This allows performing incremental backups from the file share very fast and very efficiently.
You can assign the role of a cache repository to a simple backup repository added to the Veeam Backup & Replication

ut
infrastructure. To minimize the network load during backup, locate the cache repository closer to the file share in the computer
network: at the best they should be one hop away from each other.

Lab 4.1: Prepare Veeam infrastructure for virtual machine replication

As the backup administrator, you have been tasked with deploying additional Veeam components required for replicating virtual
machines to the disaster recovery (DR) site.
Learning objectives covered in this exercise:
• Configure your installation for your environment

Task 1: Deploy required Veeam components for replicating virtual machines to the production
site

e
To perform incremental replication, Veeam Backup & Replication needs to know what data blocks have changed since the
previous job session. By default, Veeam leverages native hypervisor Changed Block Tracking (CBT) features if possible. Use of

ut
CBT increases the speed and efficiency of block-level replication operations.
A backup repository is required for storing replica metadata. The backup repository must be deployed in the source site, as
close to the source host as possible. When you perform incremental replication, the source Veeam Data Mover communicates
with the Veeam Data Mover Service on the backup repository to obtain replica metadata and quickly detect changed blocks of

ib
data between two replica states.
The source Veeam Data Mover reads the VM data from the read-only VM disk and copies it. During incremental job sessions,
the source Veeam Data Mover uses CBT to retrieve only those data blocks that have changed since the previous job session. If

tr
CBT is not available, the source Veeam Data Mover interacts with the Veeam Data Mover on the backup repository to obtain
replica metadata and uses this metadata to detect blocks that have changed since the previous job session.

Lab 6: Restoring from backup

Lab 6.2: Recover a single virtual machine after a user-error deleted all
files
Due to a user-error, all files have been deleted inside the vSphere-Tiny virtual machine on the VMware vSphere platform. You
have been tasked with recovering this virtual machine while putting the least possible load onto the production network and
storage systems.
Learning objectives covered in this exercise:
• Perform a restore responding to a number of recovery scenarios

e
Task 1: Perform an Entire VM restore with quick roll back
1. In the Home view, in the Backups section, select Disk.

tr
6. In the newly opened Full VM Restore window, on the Virtual Machines step, keep the default selection and click the
Next > button.
7. Tick the Quick rollback (restore changed block only) check box.

is
Note: Quick rollback means that the VMware changed block tracking technology will be leveraged to enable incremental
restore.

D
In the previous scenario, we assumed that the hard drives of the VM were lost because of a hardware or a storage issue. In this
one, we will assume that the virtual machine to be restored has a software problem itself - so the incremental restore option
(quick rollback) will be used.
or
Instead of restoring an entire VM or VM disk from a backup file, Veeam Backup & Replication recovers only those data blocks
that are necessary to revert the VM or VM disk to an earlier point in time. Incremental restore significantly reduces the recovery
e
time and has little impact on the production environment.
at

8. On the Restore Mode step, click the Next > button.

9. On the Reason step, leave the Restore reason blank and click the Next > button.
10. In the newly opened Veeam Backup & Replication window Click the Show VM(s) text link to verify it is only

Lab 8: Testing Backup and Replication

Lab 8.1: Perform automated backup recovery verification

The compliance team has implemented a new requirement that backups of the business-critical server vSphere-Tiny are
automatically verified to be recoverable every month. You have been tasked with configuring this for the vSphere-Tiny virtual
machine backups as an initial proof of concept before final approval by the compliance team. Requirements from the CIO:
• Automated recovery testing must be performed once a month
• Silent data corruption caused by the backup storage must be detected
Learning objectives covered in this exercise:
• Perform verification of a backup

e
Task 1: Create a basic single-host virtual lab for automated testing of backups
1. From the desktop, launch the Veeam Backup & Replication console.

ut
2. Click the Connect button.
3. Navigate to the Backup Infrastructure view.
4. In the SureBackup section of the Backup Infrastructure view, select Virtual Labs.

ib
5. On the Virtual Lab ribbon, click the Add Virtual Lab button.
6. Select VMware vSphere....
Important: The virtual lab is an isolated virtual environment in which Veeam Backup & Replication verifies VMs. In the virtual

tr
lab, Veeam Backup & Replication starts VMs from the application group and the verified VM. The virtual lab is used not only for
the SureBackup verification procedure, but also for U-AIR, On-Demand Sandbox™ and staged restore.

is
The virtual lab itself does not require that you provision extra resources for it. However, VMs running in the virtual lab consume

D
CPU and memory resources of the ESXi host where the virtual lab is deployed. All VM changes that take place during recovery
verification are written to redo log files. By default, Veeam Backup & Replication stores redo logs on the datastore selected in
the virtual lab settings and removes redo logs after the recovery process is complete.

or
The virtual lab is fully fenced off from the production environment. The network configuration of the virtual lab mirrors the
network configuration of the production environment. For example, if verified VMs and VMs from the application group are
located in two logical networks in the production environment, the virtual lab will also have two networks. The networks in the
e
virtual lab will be mapped to corresponding production networks.
at

VMs in isolated networks have the same IP addresses as in the production network. This lets VMs in the virtual lab function just
as if they function in the production environment.
