The countryside and the row of shops in the north were eradicated, making way for a shopping
center and housing, instead. There was also a bus station and a parking area being built to the
west and the east of the shopping center, respectively. In 2005, a main road runned through its
center from east to west; however in 2010, it was replaced by a way for pedestrians.

Moving on to the south of the map, the layout of the traffic route was completely changed into a
circle area for pedestrians only, which will be covered by a dual carriageway. The row of shops
in the southern side remained intact. The park was narrowed and relocated inside the
pedestrian area but the school was unchanged outside the circle

INTRODUCTION

The two maps describe a number of changes which took place in Islip town during a 10-year
period starting from 2005.
Overall, the town has been completely transformed after the constructions of several facilities.

In 2005, the main road running from east to west was lined with shops. There were two housing
areas to the south of this road while the northern side remained a rural area. A school was
located to the west of the residential areas and there was a park to the east of the
accommodations. Both the school and the park were connected to the main road by minor
roads.

As can be seen from the second picture, the most notable change that took place in Islip in
2010 was the construction of a dual carriageway surrounding the town. Besides, the main road
was converted into a pedestrian precinct and the shops on the north side of it were demolished.
A bus stop and a car park were built and in the middle of these areas, a shopping mall was
established. In addition, there was also a new housing area which can be accessed via a minor
road connecting with the divided highway. Finally, more accommodations were also built on the
south side of the pedestrian zone and the park was made smaller to make way for this
development.

SAMPLE 1

The maps detail alterations to a science park dating back to 2008. Looking from an overall
perspective, it is readily apparent that the park has expanded to include more areas for research,
education and improved accessibility.

Considering initially the northern end of the park, in 2008 there was considerable untouched natural
land that has now been replaced with a research and development center (the reception area was
also removed in favor of a university hub, while the adjacent offices remain the same). South of
these new facilities, the car park has reduced in size, the business units are unchanged, and, most
significantly, the cyber security building has been enlarged, overtaking previously undeveloped land.
In the southern section of the park, the circular IT centre has been transformed into an innovation
centre and there is a new train station on the southernmost tracks with walkways branching off to
various facilities. Finally, there are additional biking routes along an eastern road and running
through the centre of the park past the car park and new buildings as well as a bus stop on the
eastern side of campus.

SAMPLE 2

The maps below illustrate the development of a science park from 2008 to
the present day.

Overall, it is clear that the park has experienced several changes, with one
of the most prominent differences being the construction of a new research
facility and cycling lanes.

Around the bottom-left corner of the map, the old IT center has been
replaced with an innovation building while the woodlands to the left remain
untouched. The paths that lie to the east of the said facility have been
expanded to lead the way to a shrunken car park, a newly built station on
the southern railway, the college center and a renovated cyber security
building that replaces the old grassland.

Cycle paths have been constructed along the road. At the end of the
easternmost cycling lane is a new bus stop. In close proximity to the
business unit that experiences no changes, a research and development is
made in place of the old grassland in the northwestern corner of the map.
Additionally, neighboring this site is another establishment that houses an
office and an adjacent university hub that used to be the reception of this
science park.
