The Great Library of Alexandria: A Lost Treasure of Knowledge
Birth of a Dream
Around 300 BCE, Ptolemy II of Egypt envisioned a universal library that would hold
every written work known to humankind. Located in the city of Alexandria, the
library may have stored 400,000 to 700,000 scrolls, including mathematics from
Greece, medicine from India, and astronomy from Babylonia.
Scholars and Discoveries
Famous thinkers like Euclid, the father of geometry, and Eratosthenes, who
calculated Earth’s circumference with remarkable accuracy, worked there. The
library was a hub for translating texts into Greek, preserving knowledge across
cultures.
Mystery of Its Destruction
Historians debate how it was lost. Some blame Julius Caesar’s siege in 48 BCE,
others point to later Roman emperors or even early Christian conflicts. Whatever
the cause, centuries of human knowledge vanished in smoke.
Legacy Today
Modern projects like the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt and digital archives such
as Project Gutenberg carry the same dream: free access to all human knowledge.
