Assignment 5
The table provides information on the spending habits of consumers in five different
countries such as Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey across three categories in
2002. The figures are given as percentages of total national expenditure.
Overall, it is clear that in all five countries, the largest portion of consumer spending
was on Food/Drinks/Tobacco. Conversely, the Leisure/Education category accounted
for the smallest percentage of expenditure. Of the countries listed, Turkey generally
had the highest spending percentages, while Sweden's were among the lowest.
Focusing on the main category, Food/Drinks/Tobacco, Turkey had the highest
expenditure at 32.14%, followed closely by Ireland at 28.91%. The other three
countries spent considerably less on these items, with Sweden recording the lowest
figure at just 15.77%.
In the other two categories, the spending was much lower. For Clothing/Footwear,
Italy was the highest spender at 9.00%, whereas the other four countries spent
between 5.40% and 6.63%. Leisure/Education saw the lowest spending in all nations,
ranging from a low of 1.98% in Spain to a high of 4.35% in Turkey.
