Content
There are different types of crops and they are as follows:
1. Oil Crops: These refer to crops whose seeds or fruits are rich in
oil and they are mainly used for making oil. Examples are
groundnut, cotton, oil palm, coconut, sunflower etc.
2. Spices Crops: These crops are grown because they are used to
flavour food. Examples are ginger, thyme, turmeric, cinnamon,
garlic, nutmeg, curry, and pepper.
3. Latex Crops: These are crops grown mainly for the milky sap or
fluid called LATEX and when they are refined, they can be used to
make gloves, plastic cups etc. Example of this crop is rubber.
4. Forage Crops: These are crops grown for feeding farm animals.
Forage crops include guinea grass, Centrosema, elephant grass
and calopogonium.
5. Nut Crops: These are crops whose fruits consist of hard shells
that enclose fleshy parts that are edible. Examples are coconut,
cashew and oil palm.
6. Sugar Crops: These are crops mainly grown for their sugar
content. Examples are sugarcane and sugar beet.
7. Drug/Stimulant Crops: These crops are grown for the
substances or materials that they produce for medicinal purposes.
Examples are kola, neem, tobacco, garlic and lime.

Content
There are different types of crops and they are as follows:
1. Beverage Crops: These are crops that are grown mainly for
making food drink. Examples are cocoa, tea and coffee.
2. Fibre Crops: These are crops which serve as raw materials for
the manufacturing of clothes, rope, sacks or bag. The parts of the
crops used maybe the leaf, stem or even the fruit. For example,
cotton lint is gotten from the fruit and used by textile industries
for weaving clothes. Examples of these crops are jute, sisal,
cotton and kenaf.
3. Ornamental Crops: These are crops that are grown for their
aesthetic values i.e beautification of our homes and surroundings.
Some ornamental crops are also used to protect our buildings
against wind damages, erosions and for making perfumes.
Examples include rose, tulips, hibiscus, queen of the night etc.
Crops as Sources of Food Nutrients
Crops are very good sources of food nutrients to both man and
animals. Below are examples of crops as sources of food
nutrients
1. Carbohydrate Crops

Roots and tubers e.g cassava, yam, potato
Some roughages e.g elephant grass

General Uses of Crops
Generally, crops are used for the following:
1. Crops serve as food for man. Food is very important for human
survival, therefore, crops like cassava, rice, yam, onion, tomato,
maize etc are very important.
2. Some crops can be used to feed farm animals e.g maize and
sorghum are very important in feeding poultry while cassava
tubers and yam peelings are good feeds for pigs and goats.
3. Crops can be used to make clothes, bags, shoes and sandal.
Examples are cotton and rubber.
4. Crops can be used for controlling erosion. Examples are water
melon, melon, bean, etc
5. Crops can be used for the production of drugs/medicines.
6. Some crop products like timber are used for making furniture
and also used for the construction of houses.
7. Some crops are used for beautifying and decorating or homes
and surrounding. Examples are hibiscus, Ixora etc
8. Crops serve as fuel and manure when they did. When crops are
harvested the remaining will be used as firewood for cooking and
as manure.
