Homework 2

This document outlines the homework assignment for ES202 Mathematics for Engineers for the Fall 2018-2019 semester, detailing the due date and submission guidelines. It includes five problems related to matrix diagonalization, free vibration analysis of a shear frame, transformation of quadratic forms, checking matrix defectiveness, and calculating matrix inverses using the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem. Strict adherence to academic integrity and proper collaboration is emphasized, with consequences for improper conduct.

ES202 Mathematics for Engineers 2018-2019 Fall

Homework #2
Due Date: 28.11.2018, 17:00

REMARKS:
- Late homeworks will not be accepted.
- Drop your homeworks into the ES202 box at the entrance of K2 building.
- Show all your calculations step by step. Otherwise, your answers will not be graded.
Homework solutions shall be presented in a clear engineering format.
- Stay away from plagiarizing (according to dictionaries “to plagiarize” means to steal and
pass off ideas and/or words/solutions of another as one’s own without citing the source).
In case the problems are not clear to you, please ask your questions only to the teaching
assistants/instructors; do not ask your colleagues as such questions often end up with the
submission of identical solutions. If you have an improper collaboration on ANY
homework, your ALL homework grades will be set to ZERO.

1. (20%) Diagonalize the following 3 × 3 matrix 𝑨 and find an eigenbasis (a basis of

eigenvectors). Then, obtain 𝑨𝟏𝟓.

20 −10 −4
𝑨 = [ −10 20 0]
−4 0 20

2. (25%) Free vibration of the following undamped two-story shear frame is given as:

2𝑚

2𝑘

3𝑚 𝑴𝒖̈ + 𝑲𝒖 = 𝟎

3𝑘

where, 𝒖̈ and 𝒖 are the acceleration and displacement vectors, respectively. The terms ‘𝑲’ and
‘𝑴’ are the stiffness and mass matrices of the system. They are provided as follows:

3𝑚 0
𝑲 = [ 5𝑘 −2𝑘], 𝑴=[ ]
−2𝑘 2𝑘 0 2𝑚

where, 𝑚 and 𝑘 are constants representing the mass and stiffness.

(a) Determine the square modal frequencies (eigenvalues) and modes (eigenvectors) of the
system.
(b) Normalize the modes of the system using ⃑⃑⃑⃑⃑
𝒗 ∗𝒊 =(1/ 𝑴𝒊)𝒗 ⃑⃑⃑⃑𝑻 𝒊 𝑴𝒗
⃑ 𝒊 where 𝑴𝒊 = 𝒗 ⃑ 𝒊 and 𝒗
⃑𝒊
is the 𝑖 𝑡ℎ mode as obtained in part (a).

Hint: The eigenvalue analysis for this system can be performed through det(𝑲 − 𝜆𝑴) = 0
where the eigenvalues correspond to the square modal frequencies (𝜔2 ) and the eigenvecto rs
correspond to the modal shape of the structure.

3. (20%) Transform the following quadratic form to principal axes. Express 𝑥 𝑇 = [𝑥 1 𝑥2 ]

in terms of the new coordinate vector 𝑦 𝑇 = [𝑦1 𝑦2 ].

3𝑥1 2 + 22𝑥 1 𝑥2 + 3𝑥 2 2 = 0

4. (20%) Check whether the following matrix is defective or not. Calculate the algebraic
and geometric multiplicities of the eigenvalues.

−12 22 6
𝑩= [ 8 2 6]
−8 20 16

5. (15%) Calculate the inverse of the following matrix using Cayley-Hamilton Theorem.

13 0 −15
𝑪 = [−3 4 9 ]
5 0 −7
