SKILL DEVELOPMENT

❑ Introduction: Skill development is one of the most crucial pillars for national
growth, economic stability, and youth empowerment in India. With a rapidly growing
population and technological transformation, India needs a skilled workforce to meet
the demands of modern industries and services.

❑ Need for Skill Development:

• Over 65% of India’s population is below the age of 35.

• However, only a small percentage of the workforce is formally skilled.
• Industries face a shortage of skilled manpower, while millions remain unemployed or
underemployed.
• Skill development helps bridge the gap between education and employment.

❑ Government Initiatives:

• Skill India Mission (2015):

o Launched by PM Narendra Modi to train over 40 crore people by 2022.
o Motto: “Kaushal Bharat, Kushal Bharat” (Skilled India, Strong India).
• Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY):
o Offers free training in various sectors.
o Certification to enhance employability.
• National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC):
o A public-private partnership promoting skill development by funding vocational
institutions.
• SANKALP and STRIVE Schemes:
o Focus on strengthening Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and capacity building.
• Skill Hubs in schools and colleges to integrate vocational training with academics.
