Waves Notes

A wave is defined as a disturbance that transfers energy without transferring matter, with two main types: transverse and longitudinal. Key terms include wavelength, frequency, period, amplitude, and wave speed, which describe various properties of waves. Wave behaviors include reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference, with standing waves resulting from the superposition of two opposing waves.

Waves – Summary Notes

Definition of a Wave: A disturbance that transfers energy without transferring matter.

Types of Waves:
- Transverse: Oscillations are perpendicular to wave direction (e.g., light, water waves).
- Longitudinal: Oscillations are parallel to wave direction (e.g., sound waves).
Key Terms:
- Wavelength (λ): Distance between two crests/troughs or compressions/rarefactions.
- Frequency (f): Number of waves per second.
- Period (T): Time for one wave, T = 1/f.
- Amplitude (A): Maximum displacement.
- Wave speed (v): v = fλ.
Wave Behaviours: Reflection, Refraction, Diffraction, Interference.
Standing Waves: Formed by superposition of two waves moving in opposite directions.
