A day in space - Life in space

The International Space Station (ISS) is a big space ship. Find out
about life there:
- Six astronauts live there. They usually stay for between three or
six months. Sometimes other astronauts visit for one or two
weeks. A total of ten astronauts can stay there.
- It takes two days to get to the station from Earth.
- The astronauts are different nationalities and there are men and
women.
- Time is different in space – there isn’t night and day like on Earth.
- The astronauts are awake for twelve hours every day. They are
always busy! They do a lot of science experiments. They clean
and repair the station too.
- They do exercises for two hours every day to stay strong.
- There aren’t any showers in the space station!
- There are three meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. There
are also snacks if they are hungry. Food in space is different –
astronauts don’t cook, they eat dry food. There isn’t any fruit.
- Their bedrooms are very small and they don’t sleep on beds –
they float in the air!
- They use email and a special phone to contact their families and
friends.
