2. Course description

This course exposes students to different kinds of texts in English, particularly descriptive,
recount, and procedure texts. It covers some basic reading skills for reading texts of various
topics e.g. scanning, previewing and predicting, finding topics and main ideas, skimming,
making inferences, and summarizing. Practices on using the skills will be explored in the
exercises that follow the texts. The teaching and learning processes along the course of the
semester incorporates the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) in tandem with the Process-Based
approach. These methods go in cycles in terms of text type and in cycles in terms of process
as well. Therefore, in the perspective of genre students study the text models, build the
knowledge of the field, write jointly, and finally write independently.

3. Program Expected Learning Outcomes (ELOs)


1. Integrate theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in English as a Foreign Language
education with the reference to level B2 of CEFR with another relevant supportive
knowledge.
2. Perform effective lesson planning, teaching practice, and evaluation in the EFL education
context with appropriate technology and resources.
3. Apply morals, ethics, and university core values to uphold and maintain academic and social
relations.
4. Demonstrate 21st Century skills, especially to do with creativity, effective collaboration,
communication, and critical thinking in multidisciplinary and socio-cultural contexts.
5. Perform basic research to contribute to the development and enhancement of EFL education.

Upon the completion of the course, students are expected to:


1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of features, generic patterns, and social nature of descriptive,
recount, and procedure texts in reading and writing.
2. Perform the abilities in reading and writing the texts according to assigned circumstances.

7. Description of learning activities

Activities involved in the course will vary, including lecture, question and answer,
presentation. discussion, exercises, and practice of text analysis. Over the course, students
will be guided to gain knowledge about reading and writing as well as its application in text
analysis and in teaching EFL. Learning activities will also employ intensive and extensive
reading where students are exposed to a variety of topics from different sources and countries,
and they develop their own reading habits by asking them to choose their favorite reading
topics and share them with the rest of the class.
Students will be guided and provided with feedback on the structure, language features,
content, fluency and pronunciation and other aspects of oral communication, such as eye
contact and body language from both the lecturer and peers.
The learning mode will be offline and online using various learning media (zoom, WA group,
google sites).
Furthermore, the student’s learning outcomes will be assessed through multiple learning and
assessment tasks.

Essential Administrative Information
Attendance Policy
Based on the Pedoman Penyelenggaraan Pendidikan (University Academic Guidelines, 2018,
p. 58), students should fulfil a minimum of 80% of the attendance. Those who have less than 80%
attendance and fail to provide proper documents to validate the absences are not eligible to participate
in the final examination and will fail the course.
Plagiarism
The university enforces anti-plagiarism policies that ensure the integrity of the university.
Any suspected behaviors relating to plagiarism and other academic misconduct will be processed
through an ad-hoc Student Discipline Commission at the faculty. Students proven to commit
plagiarism and other academic misconducts will be sanctioned, depending on the severity of the
misconduct, among others: a verbal warning, written warning, suspension, and the cancellation of the
student status issued by a Rector Decree (Pedoman Penyelenggaraan Pendidikan/University
Academic Guidelines, 2018, p. 103)
Grievances and Solving Problems
If a student has a problem with this class, the first step he/she should take is to discuss it with
the lecturer of the class. If the problem is unresolved, the academic advisor can step in to help resolve
the issue, and then the study program chair, the head of the department, in that order. In the case of
unresolved issues after the aforementioned procedures have been taken, an ad hoc ombudsman
committee at the faculty level will be formed to settle the issues. More information regarding the roles
of Academic Advisors, Study Program and Department leadership are available in the Pedoman
Penyelenggaraan Pendidikan (University Academic Guidelines).
Students with Disabilities
