SESSION 2025-26 TOPIC: Current Electricity -I
1. A negligibly small current is passed through a wire of length 15 m and uniform cross-section 6.0 × 10–7
m2, and its resistance is measured to be 5.0 𝛺. What is the resistivity of the material at the temperature of
the experiment?
2. The number density of free electrons in a copper conductor is 8.5 × 1028 m–3. How long does an electron
take to drift from one end of a wire 3.0 m long to its other end ? The area of cross-section of the wire is
2.0 × 10–6 m2 and it is carrying a current of 3.0 A.
3. Two wires of equal length, one of aluminium and the other of copper have the same resistance. Which of
the two wires is lighter ? Hence explain why aluminium wires are preferred for overhead power cables.
Given: 𝜌𝐴𝑙 = 2.63 × 10−8 𝛺𝑚, 𝜌𝐶𝑢 = 1.72 × 10−8 𝛺𝑚, relative density of Al = 2.7 and that of Cu = 8.9.
4. A potential difference V is applied to a conductor of length l, diameter D. How are the electric field E, the
drift velocity 𝑣𝑑 and the resistance R affected when (i) V is doubled, (ii) l is doubled, (iii) D is doubled ?
5. A wire of length L0 has a resistance R0. It is generally stretched till its length becomes 1.5 L0 .
(i) Plot the graph showing variation of its resistance R with its length L during stretching.
(ii) What will be its resistance when its length becomes 1.5 L0 ?
6. Two metallic wires, P1 and P2 of the same material and same length but different cross-sectional areas, A1
and A2 are joined together and connected to a source of emf. Find the ratio of the drift velocities of free
electrons in the two wires when they are connected (i) in series, and (ii) in parallel.
7. The number densities of free electrons in three conductors X, Y and Z are in the ratio 4 : 1 : 8, and their
electrical conductivities are in the ratio 2 : 1 : 2. For which conductor will the relaxation time of free electrons
be (a) maximum, and (b) minimum?
8. The I-V characteristics of two wires X and Y at constant temperatures are shown in figure. The two wires
have equal lengths and diameters. Which of them is made up of material of larger resistivity ?
9. The resistance of a coil used in a platinum-resistance thermometer at 0 oC is 3 Ω and at 100 oC is 3.75 Ω.
Its resistance at an unknown temperature is measured as 3.15 Ω. Calculate the unknown temperature.
10. A storage battery of emf 8.0 V and internal resistance 0.5 Ω is being charged by a 120 V dc supply using a
series resistor of 15.5 Ω. What is the terminal voltage of the battery during charging? What is the purpose
of having a series resistor in the charging circuit?
11. Two cells of emfs 1.5 V and 2.0 V having internal resistances 0.2 Ω and 0.3 Ω respectively are connected
in parallel. Calculate the emf and internal resistance of the equivalent cell.
12. In the given circuit in the steady state, obtain the expressions for (i) the potential drop (ii) the charge and
(iii) the energy stored in the capacitor, C.
