Prerequisite: Knowledge of automobile systems, Basic electronics, Sensors and Actuators.

Course objectives:

1. To provide the understanding of automotive systems, electrical and electronic systems (Embedded Systems) used in
automobiles
2. To understand the electronic controls integrated with automotive engines.
3. To understand the different automotive digital system controls and Dashboard instrumentation.
4. To understand the vehicle communication networks and related protocols.
5. To conceptualize automotive electronic technologies for future and diagnostics.

COURSE CONTENT
Unit I. Fundamentals of Automotive Electronics (08)
Automotive electronics evolution, Current trends, Open and closed loop control strategies, PID control, look
up tables, Automotive sensors and actuators, Electronic control unit (ECU) Introduction to modern control
strategies like fuzzy logic and adaptive control.
Unit II. Digital Engine Control System (09)
Digital Engine control features, Control modes for fuel Control (Seven Modes), EGR Control, Integrated
Engine Control System - Secondary Air Management, Evaporative Emissions Canister Purge, Automatic
System Adjustment, Electronic Ignition control and Electronic Injection control.
Automotive Electrical: Batteries, starter motor & drive mechanism, D.C. generator & alternator.
Unit III. Automotive controls & Instrumentation (09)
Vehicle digital controls: Digital cruise control, Electronic suspension control, Electronic steering control,
Antilock braking system, Automatic temperature controls, Safety controls, Tyre pressure monitoring system.
Digital Instrumentation: Gauges and Displays, Head up displays (HUD), Multiplexed displays, Holography,
Telematics.
Unit IV. Vehicle communication networks & Protocols (08)
Multiplexing communication protocols, Multiplexing systems, Bus Systems - Classification, Applications in
the vehicle, Coupling of networks, Examples of networked vehicles, Buses - CAN Bus, LIN Bus, MOST Bus,
Bluetooth, Flex Ray.
Unit V. Automotive Diagnostics & Future electronic systems (09)
Automotive Diagnostics: Timing Light, Engine Analyzer, On-board diagnostics, Off-board diagnostics, Expert
Systems, Occupant Protection Systems – Accelerometer based Air Bag systems.
Future Automotive Electronic Systems: Alternative Fuel Engines, Electric and Hybrid vehicles, Fuel cell
powered cars, Collision Avoidance Radar warning Systems, Speech Synthesis, Navigation – Navigation

COURSE OUTCOMES:
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Acquire an overview of automotive components, subsystems, and basics of Electronic Engine Control in
today ‘s automotive industry.
2. Understand the Digital Engine control systems.
3. Classify & understand the driver assistance system and its electronics.
4. Apply the different principles including its electronic features to the climate control and chassis control.
5. Evaluate the diagnostics aspects of the automobiles.
