III. Label the number line from -3 to 3 with equal intervals.
IV. Label the number line from -7 to 21 with interval of 7.
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
V. Plot the points on the number line and answer the following questions.
1. Start at 4 on the number line. Hop 4 units to the left, then 2 units to
the right. At what number will you land?
2. Hop 7 units to the right from -1 on the number line. At what number
will you land?
3. Move 5 units to the left from 6 on the number line. Now, move 4
units to the right. At what number will you land?
What’s New
Four-Row-Bro!
Are you familiar with Tic-Tac-Toe?
You are going to play this game with a twist. To start , ask a family
member to play with you.
Mechanics:
1. In a piece of paper draw 3 similar figures as show below.
2. You need two players. You are X and your playmate is ∆. Players take
turns in putting their marks on the dots.
3. The winner! - the first player to get 4 of his/her marks in a row (up,
down, across, or diagonally).
It is a tie! - if no one gets 4 marks in a row when there is no remaining
spot left.
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
4. Play this thrice. The best of 3 will win the game.
5. You will use the numbers at the bottom and left part to answer the
Task that follows the game.
Additional Task:
After playing all 3 rounds, identify the location of the points with X
marks. Use the result from the last round. To know the location of a point,
look at the numbers on the horizontal and vertical lines. Write the numbers in
the parentheses ( ), respectively.
Guide Questions:

What is It
The Rectangular Coordinate System also
known as Cartesian Coordinate System was
named and developed after the French
Mathematician, René Descartes (1596 – 1650) in
the 17th century.
A Rectangular coordinate system is formed
by two perpendicular number lines intersecting at
the origin. These number lines are the axes. The
horizontal line is the x-axis and the vertical line is
the y-axis. The axes divide the plane into four
regions which are called quadrants.
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Each point is represented by a pair of numbers (x, y) called
coordinates. This pair of numbers is also known as ordered pair which
shows the location of a point in a Cartesian plane. The first element of the
ordered pair is called abscissa, or x-coordinate which denotes the distance
and direction of the point from the origin along the x-axis. The second
element of the ordered pair is called ordinate, or y-coordinate which
denotes the distance and direction of the point from the origin along the y-
axis.
Ordered pair (3, 5)
x-coordinate y-coordinate
Determining the Location of Points
The signs of the ordered pair for each quadrant are as follows:
Quadrant I: (+, +)
Quadrant II: (-, +)
Quadrant III: (-, -)
Quadrant IV: (+, -)
Consider the following ordered pairs in the given
graph below.
The ordered pair (2, 1) represents the
coordinates of point C. The signs of the
numbers in the ordered pair are both positive
(+, +) therefore, point C is in Quadrant I.
The ordered pair (-3, 4) represents the
coordinates of point A. The signs of the
numbers in the ordered pair are negative and
positive (-, +) therefore, point A is in Quadrant
II.
The ordered pair (3, -2) represents the
coordinates of point B. The signs of the numbers in the ordered pair
are positive and negative (+, -) therefore, point B is in Quadrant IV.
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
The ordered pair (2, 0) represents the
coordinates of point D because it went 2 units
to the right along the a-axis but didn’t move
along y-axis, therefore point D is lying in the
x-axis.
Point E is at the origin, therefore, the ordered
pair that will describe its coordinates is (0, 0)
The ordered pair (0, -3) represents the
coordinates of point F because it didn’t move along x-axis but went
down 4 units along the y-axis. We can say that point C is lying on y-
axis.
Plotting of Points
To plot point P with coordinates (x, y):
For the value of x-coordinate

Negative (-) to the left

Uses and Application of Rectangular Coordinate System:
The rectangular coordinate system has a wide range of use in determining
the exact location or position of objects in space and time. It plays a great role
in navigations using maps and global positioning system (GPS). Research
and studies utilized it in identifying the position of heavenly bodies such as
sun, earth, and the moon to predict solar and lunar eclipses. It also helped
the Medical Science for the diagnosis and treatment of disease and
illness. More so, in the application of technology, e.g., when creating
structures with complex designs.

During this trying time, you are obliged to stay at home. Your additional task
is to make your own “dot-to-dot” picture. Plot and connect at least 20 points
in a Cartesian plane to create a figure or object. Your picture should have at
least two points in each quadrant. Use a graphing paper for your masterpiece.
Maximize your art materials and be creative. Enjoy working!
