1. The distributive property of multiplication means that you multiply each number inside
the parentheses by the number outside the parentheses, before adding or subtracting.
This is correctly done in answer (B). First, the seven outside the parentheses was
multiplied by the first number in the parentheses, the 2x.
7 × 2x = 14x.
Next, the seven was multiplied by the second number in the parentheses, the 5x.
7 × 5x = 35x.
As this question only requires estimates, then do not use the numbers as they are. Round to the
place value of the first digit. There are 207 pupils competing. The first digit is in the hundreds
column, so round to the nearest 100. This rounds to 200 pupils.
They are split into 22 teams—this rounds to 20 teams, to the nearest ten. These numbers are
far easier to use.
Using these rounded numbers, you can calculate the number of pupils per team by sharing 200
between 20 teams:
10 x 3 = 30 events.
data.
The speed limit before the highway is denoted “y”. Therefore, the speed limit on the highway is
y + 20 (as the instructions suggest, 20 miles per hour more than before).
Therefore, you know that y + 20 is the maximum speed allowed. The last thing to answer is how
to represent Johanna’s speed. Johanna’s speed before she reached the highway is denoted by
“x”. After that, you are told Johanna increases her speed by 17 miles per hour. That means her
new speed (in the highway) is x + 17.
Johanna must not drive at a higher speed than the limit. Therefore, you can conclude that the
limit has to be greater than her speed. In other words: x + 17 < y + 20
Note: Notice that the fact that Johanna is driving 15 miles per hour below the limit before she
reaches the highway is irrelevant to answer the question. From that information, you can
conclude that y = x + 15, but this does not help you create the relationship the question is
requesting.
The letters y and x are variables, which means they can change, as seen in the table. You can
change the distance you travel in a taxi and the cost of the taxi ride will then change accordingly.
In the equation y = x + c, c is a constant number, which means it will not change. To write this
equation, you must find the constant number that links the two columns in the table.
The expression contains a function called absolute value. This function measures the distance of
the expression inside it from the number zero in the number line.
The absolute value function always returns either a zero or a positive number (much like
distance, it cannot be negative). An example is |– 3|, measuring the distance of minus three
from zero. Locate the number in the number line to find this:
The absolute value (or distance from zero) is three. Another way to calculate it is by simply
removing the negative sign. In summary, for a positive expression, the absolute value does not
change the expression. For a negative expression, it simply removes the minus sign.
Now, to answer the question, substitute the value of x by the different options and then
calculate the absolute value of the result.
Answer (A) is correct because if x = – 2 then the expression becomes | –2 – 2| = |–4| = 4 and
this is the highest result.
When dividing decimals, you can do the division in the same way, but you must line up the
decimal point in the answer to be above the original decimal point.
When multiplying two decimals, an important rule of thumb is that there should be the same
number of decimal places in the answer as the question. Decimal places refer to how many
numbers there are after the decimal point.
A quick reminder:
Quadrilaterals are shapes with four sides.
A square has equal sides and its angles are right angles (90°).
A rectangle is a shape with four sides and its angles are right angles (90°). Its opposite sides are
equal and parallel.
A rhombus is a shape with four equal sides. In addition, the opposite sides of a rhombus are
parallel.
A parallelogram is a shape with four sides. Its opposite sides are equal and parallel.
Now, check the answer choices:
Answer (A): The shape is a quadrilateral as it has four sides, but it is not a square as its angles
are not right angles (90°). Thus, this answer choice can be eliminated.
Answer (B): The shape is a quadrilateral as it has four sides. It is also a rhombus as it has four
equal sides and its opposite sides are parallel. However, it is not a square as its angles are not
right angles (90°). Thus, this answer choice can be eliminated.
Answer (C): The shape is a rhombus as it has four equal sides and its opposite sides are parallel.
However, it is not a rectangle as its angles are not right angles (90°). Thus, this answer choice
can be eliminated.
Answer (D): The shape is a quadrilateral as it has four sides, it is a rhombus as it has four equal
sides and its opposite sides are parallel, and it is a parallelogram as its opposite sides are equal
and parallel. Note that every rhombus is also a parallelogram.
You are given two numbers on the number line to allow you to calculate the size of each gap.
Between 0.1 and 0.15, there are five gaps. If you write 0.1 as 0.10 to match the two decimal
places in 0.15, then it is easier to compare the numbers. The difference between 0.15 and 0.10
is 0.05. See below.
0.15
- 0.10
0.05
Thus, the five gaps cover 0.05 units, therefore each gap must represent 0.01, as 0.05 ÷ 5 = 0.01.
The second mark on the number line, at position A is 0.10 + 0.01 = 0.11.
The third mark is 0.11 + 0.01 = 0.12. Each time you move along a step on the number line, you
add 0.01.
Therefore, 0.21 is in the position of answer (E), six gaps after 0.15.
However, before doing so, it is best if you perform a few calculations to make checking the
answers easier. Start by multiplying each side by five. this is in order to eliminate the
denominator. You get:
5(3y – 8) < 2x + 6
15y – 40 < 2x + 6
Now, try using the answers by placing X and Y values of each answer in the given inequality and
see if the results are mathematically correct.
Answer (A) is the correct answer because 15 x 3 – 40 = 5 and 2 x 0 + 6 = 6. This gives 5 < 6 and
this is a correct statement.
Answer (B) is incorrect because 15 x 4 – 40 = 20 and 2 x 1 + 6 = 8. This gives 20 < 8 which is false.
Answer (C) is incorrect because 15 x 4 – 40 = 20 and 2 x (– 1) + 6 = 4. This gives 20 < 4 and this,
too, is false.
Answer (D) is incorrect because 15 x 5 – 40 = 35 and 2 x 7 + 6 = 20. This gives 35 < 20; also false.
This question can easily be solved using the "Handshake problem." This problem states that if
any number of people shake hands with each other, denote this number with "n", then the
number of handshakes in total equals n(n–1)/2.
You can apply this solution for any case. In this problem, there are 10 people. Therefore, n = 10
and the number of handshakes equals 10 x 9 / 2 = 45.
A way to see this is by lining up the 10 people in a row. Then, the first one can shake hands with
the rest (and then leaves). That equals nine handshakes. Then the second person shakes hands
with the people remaining. That equals eight handshakes.
You can keep this logic until the end to see that the number of handshakes must equal:
9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 45
If you denote the radius at the base of the cylinder with the letter “r” and use “h” the height of
the cylinder, then the cylinder can be drawn as follows:
If the radius is doubled, then instead of “r” you can write “2r” (double the amount). Then, the
new volume (denoted V’) becomes: V' = π × (2r)2 × h
Since the volume is calculated by multiplying, you can change the order of the multiplication
without affecting the result. Now, notice that the formula for the original volume V appears
inside this new formula (bolded).
First expand 105. This means 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10, which is equal to a one with five zeroes after
it: 100,000. The exponent, five, tells you the number of zeroes.
In scientific notation, the five also means that the decimal place on the number 3.25 moves five
places back. This is the same as multiplying by 100,000.
Add some zeroes to the end of 3.25 to allow you space to move the decimal point.
3.2500000
Therefore, the new number is 325000.00. It is not necessary to include the zeroes after the
decimal point, so write the number as 325,000.
As you are multiplying by 103, move the decimal place back three places to make 2,100. In other
words, you are multiplying 2.1 by 1,000.
To answer this question, you need to divide 70 by three to see what the remainder is. Since
three pieces of candy go into each bag, the remainder will be the pieces of candy left over that
are not enough to fill a bag. Therefore, the answer cannot be (C), (D), or (E) since if three or
more pieces were left over she could have filled another bag.
Set up the division as shown. First, do 7 ÷ 3 = 2 remainder 1. Write the 2 in the answer line and
write the remainder before the zero to create 10.
As there are no more numbers to divide, the remainder is written on the answer line.
Therefore, 70 ÷ 3 = 23 remainder 1.
This means that Ethan's mom can fill 23 party bags and she will have one piece of candy left
over. Therefore, the correct answer is (A).
Exponents are attached to base numbers. In 25, the two is the base number and the five is the
exponent. 25 means 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2. Two is multiplied by itself five times.
Take it in stages:
2x2=4
4x2=8
8 x 2 = 16
16 x 2 = 32
32 means 3 x 3 = 9.
32 + 9 = 41.
When raising ten to an exponent, then the exponent tells you the number of zeroes there will
be in the answer.
Check by multiplying:
10 x 10 = 100
100 x 10 = 1,000
1,000 x 10 = 10,000
10,000 x 10 = 100,000.
First, count the number of orange and green faces. There are three orange faces and six green
faces.
You must write these numbers in the correct order in the ratio. The question states orange faces
first, therefore the ratio is 3:6.
Ratios can be simplified in the same way as fractions. Divide by a common multiple. Here, both
numbers can be divided by three to give 1:2.
If you answered (A) you gave the ratio of orange faces in relation to the total number of faces.
If you answered (D), you wrote the ratio of green faces to orange faces. This has also not been
simplified.
This is a straightforward fraction division question. Dividing and multiplying are the inverse
operations of each other, meaning one can reverse the other. For example, multiplying by two
and then dividing by two gets you back to the original answer.
Switching the numbers around in a fraction gives you the reciprocal of the original fraction. For
example, 3/4 is the reciprocal of 4/3. If you multiply by the reciprocal of a fraction, it is the same
as dividing by the original fraction. Therefore, instead of dividing by 11/20, you can multiply by
20/11, as below.
315÷1120
315×2011
15×2011
11×411
411.
and then reduce the answer at the end. Just be sure to leave the answer in its simplest form.
The range in a set of numbers is the highest number minus the lowest number.
In the list above, the highest number so far is four and the lowest number so far is one.
The range is 4 – 1 = 3.
The article says that the real range is five, so that means the missing number is either higher
than four or lower than one, to make the difference bigger.
The probability of an event occurring can be calculated by looking at all the favorable cases and
dividing it by the total number of outcomes.
The sample space is the set of all outcomes of an experiment. In this case, it contains all the
possible results of three coin-tosses, that is: {Heads, Heads, Heads}, {Heads, Heads, Tails},
{Heads, Tail, Heads}, {Heads, Tails, Tails}, {Tails, Heads, Heads}, {Tails, Tails, Heads}, {Tails, Heads,
Tails}, {Tails, Tails, Tails}.
Therefore, the probability of having at least two heads in the result is 4/8 = 1/2.
You need to find all the possible combinations of jewelry. To do so, you can use a small diagram
as below:
One way to understand that you need to multiply these numbers is by checking the reasoning
behind the combinations. If you had two options (for example rings and necklaces), you could
make a tree with the different outcomes (ring “a” with necklace “a”, ring “a” with necklace “b”,
and so on). For each ring you have three necklaces. That gives a total of 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 3 x 4 =
12.
When you have more options, you multiply all the numbers to see the number of combinations
possible. Sometimes this is referred to as the “and” hint. This implies that the word “or”
involves sum and the word “and” involves multiplication. Lisa has different earrings, different
necklaces, and different rings.
Each option for a ring has 15 (3 x 5 = 15) different combinations of necklaces and earrings.
Therefore, you have 4 x 15 = 60.
The perimeter of a shape is the distance around the object. To calculate the perimeter of any
shape you need to add the lengths of all the sides of the shape.
Notice that not all sides have their lengths written. Based on the measurements of the sides,
you can deduce that the remaining sides are each four centimeters.
Now, in order to calculate the possible combinations for one cone, you need to know the
number of flavors and the number of scoops.
Each cone can hold three scoops, and there are four flavors to choose. Therefore, each cone has
4 x 4 x 4 = 64 possible combinations (for example, three vanilla, or two vanilla and one
chocolate, or one vanilla, one chocolate, and one strawberry, etc.).
Finally, there are three friends in total. Therefore, each friend has 64 combinations to choose
from. This gives a total of 64 + 64 + 64 = 64 x 3 = 192 combinations.
Decomposing allows you to take a difficult number and break it down to make it easier to
multiply. The best way to decompose in multiplication is to break down the more complicated
number of the numbers multiplied, usually the greater one. In addition, it is important to break
it down fully to its different parts, such as hundreds, tens, and one, and not only to a part of the
parts.
In this case, the more complicated number is 382. As 382 contains three hundreds, eight tens
and two ones, you can write it as the sum of those parts:
382 = 300 + 80 + 2. This means that instead of multiplying 17 by 382 in one go, you can multiply
17 by each of the decomposed parts and at the end add the results. This is the same as
multiplying by 382.
Therefore, the correct answer is (C).
The horizontal axis represents the x values of the function and the vertical axis represents the y
values (what the function returns, also known as the image of the function). The function has
the shape of a line. Therefore, its formula must have y = mx + n where m is the slope.
The tables refer to the x values: zero, one, two, three, minus one. Check some of these values
on the graph to see their approximate y value and verify which table is correct. You can use your
finger to do that. For example: point on the X value "1", and go straight up until you reach the
function line. From that point, go straight left until you reach the Y axis. You can see that the
number you reached is 1. Therefore, when the X value is 1, the function returns 1.
Answer (A) is correct because by looking at the table and comparing it with the graph, you can
see that the points match.
You can check the values of the table with the graph of the function to understand which table
is the correct one. First of all, notice that the function is a straight line. Moreover, it is an
increasing function, the higher the x-values the greater the results of the y-values.
Based on this, you can rule out answers (A) and (C). Answer (A) is incorrect because substituting
x = 0, you get a higher y-value than substituting x = 1. Answer (C) is incorrect because
substituting x = 0, you get a higher y-value than substituting x = 2.
Looking at the graph, you can see that the straight line intersects the x-axis at x = 2. This means
the y-value there is zero (also called a zero of the function or a root). The straight line also
intersects the y-axis at y = – 2. At this intersection, the value of x is always zero. Therefore, when
x = 0, y = – 2.
To find the missing length, you need to use the Pythagorean Theorem.
The Pythagorean Theorem can only be applied to right triangles (triangles with a 90-degree
angle). If the lengths of the sides of a triangle are represented by the letters “a” and “b”, the
theorem states that the hypotenuse (the longest side of the triangle represents its length with
“c”) is calculated as follows: c2 = a2 + b2
In this case, the hypotenuse is ten, and one of the sides (either the one represented by “a” or
“b”, it does not matter) is eight. Therefore, using the Pythagorean Theorem, you have that: 102 =
82 + b2
Now, take the independent terms (the numbers only) to one side using the opposite operation
(the 64 is adding on the right side, so it moves to the left side with a minus sign).
100 – 64 = b2
Therefore: 36 = b2
Finally, if a number that is squared equals 36, then the number must be equal to the square
root of 36.
To answer this question, start by replacing the variable “t” with six.
Remember PEMDAS to use the correct order of operations. PEMDAS stands for Parentheses,
Exponent, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction. Therefore, you must begin with
calculating what is inside the parentheses. 6 – 6 = 0 and 6 + 5 = 11. Substitute these results:
Now, in order to calculate what is inside the [ ] symbol, you need to start with the exponent,
then multiplication, and finally addition and subtraction (notice there is no division inside the
parentheses). 0 x 0 = 0 and – 3(11) = – 33.
Finally, multiply by two and divide by three to get the result:
To answer this question, you will need to substitute x = 2 in each of the answer choices and see
which one reveals a correct statement. Remember that absolute value measures the distance of
the expression inside it from zero in the number line.
If the number inside it is positive, the absolute value can be removed without having to change
the number. If the number inside it is negative, the absolute value removes the minus sign.

To answer this question, you need to understand certain properties of the exponential function.
The properties explained below contain the letters “a”, “b” and “m” to represent any number.
Property one:
Property two:
Property three:
Start by applying the second property to the second set of parentheses. You get:
Now, apply the first property to both parentheses. You get: and
The horizontal axis represents the x values of the function and the vertical axis represents the y

Answer (A) is correct because by looking at the table and comparing it with the graph, you can
see that the points match.
Answer (B) is incorrect because if you substitute the value of x by three, the image is not two,
but greater.
Answer (C) is incorrect because you can clearly see that the value one returns the number one,
and not two (as the table suggests).
Answer (D) is incorrect because if you substitute minus one in the function, according to the
graph, you get minus three, not minus two.

ANGLE
A parallelogram is comprised of two parallel edges. Thus, AB is parallel to CD and therefore,
angles α and β are alternate angles, and therefore they are congruent.
You can eliminate answer choices A and B, where α and β are different.
∢DAB and ∢ABC are consecutive interior angles. Therefore, they add up to 180°:
∢DAB+∢ABC=180° →
70°+∢ABC=180° →
∢ABC=110°
In addition, ∢ABC is comprised of β and 30°, thus:
∢ABC=β+30° →
∢ABC-30°=β →
110°-30°=β →
80°=β
And as β equals α, α=β=80°.
Alternatively, you can find α first:
∢DAB and ∢BCD are opposite angles and therefore they are congruent and equal 70°. Looking at
the small triangle, the total of its angles equals 180°. Therefore,
α+30°+70°=180°→
α=80°.

One way to read the proportion is by saying, “For every two boys, there are three girls in Miss
Honey’s class.” Note that this does not indicate the total number of students in the class. The
class could have 30 students, 12 of which are boys and 18 are girls (or 60 students, 24 are boys
and 36 girls, etc.). This way of reading proportions is true for all proportions (in a proportion a:b
you can always say: for every “a” ____ there are “b” ____). In particular, you can see that there
are more girls than boys.
If “x” represents the boys and “y” represents the girls, you can translate the above sentence as
follows: 3x = 2y. This means that three times the number of boys equals twice the number of
girls (or for every two boys, there are three girls). This expression is answer (A).
Answer (B) is incorrect because the equation x = 3y is the proportion 3:1 and is equivalent to
the statement “For every girl there are three boys” or “There are three times as many boys as
there are girls.”
Answer (C) is incorrect because the equation 2x = y is the proportion 1:2 and is equivalent to
the statement “For every two girls there is one boy” or “There are twice as many girls as there
are boys.”
Answer (D) is incorrect because the equation 2x = 3y is the proportion 3:2 and is equivalent to
the statement “For every three boys there are two girls.” This is an example of how the order of
the numbers in a proportion is crucial to understanding the statement it represents.
Tip: Whenever you translate a ratio into an equation, the numbers are interchanged. If the ratio
is 1:2 it means that 2x = y (notice how in the ratio you have 1:2, the two being on the right, but
in the equation, the number two is on the left side). This is because if the ratio explains that
there are twice as many “y” as there are “x”, “x” needs to be multiplied by two to equal “y”.
Statement A is correct. You can use the graph to locate ( x , y ). Moreover, the point appears in
the fourth quadrant and therefore its x-value will be positive, and its y value will be negative.
Statement C is correct. For a triangle to be reflected over the x-axis, each of its points must
switch sides regarding the x-axis, while staying the same distance from the x-axis. For example;
the point ( 1 , 4 ) moves from being above the x-axis to underneath it. In addition, it is at the
same distance from the x-axis (its Y value has the same value, but a different sign).
Statement B is incorrect, as the shape is reflected over the x-axis and not the y-axis.
Statement D is incorrect, as the point ( x , y) appears in the fourth quadrant, and therefore it
must have a positive x-value.
You can solve this question by trying the answer choices. In a two-dimensional coordinate
system, the ordered pair (x, y) represents a point .The first coordinate is the value for the 'x' and
the second one is the value for the 'y'.
● To solve this question, start by finding the probability that one non-yellow ball is chosen.
Then find the probability that a second non-yellow ball chosen from the remaining, and
finally the same with a third ball (Note that there is no replacement- a ball that has been
chosen is not returning to the box and cannot be chosen again).
● Since there is a total of 10 balls in the box (3 yellow + 5 green + 2 red = 10) and three
yellow balls, the probability to randomly choose a ball that is not yellow is:
7/10
● After one (non-yellow) ball is chosen, the box still has 9 balls, 3 of which are yellow. The
probability of choosing another ball that is not yellow is:
6/9=2/3
● After two non-yellow balls are chosen, the box still has 8 balls, 3 of which are yellow. The
probability of choosing another ball that is not yellow is:
5/8
● Finally, multiply all the probabilities you have found together to discover the probability
that none of the chosen balls from the box is yellow:
7/10×2/3×5/8
=(7×2×5)/(10×3×8)
=70/240=7/24

17 by each of the decomposed parts and at the end add the results. This is the same as
multiplying by 382.
Therefore, the correct answer is (C).
The first thing to know about proportions is that they usually express a division (hence, the
similar sign). Another important thing about proportions is that the order of the expression
(boys to girls) and the numbers in the proportion (2:3) is crucial.
One way to read the proportion is by saying, “For every two boys, there are three girls in Miss
Honey’s class.” Note that this does not indicate the total number of students in the class. The

system, the ordered pair (x, y) represents a point .The first coordinate is the value for the 'x' and
the second one is the value for the 'y'.
Similar triangles have the same shape but may come in different sizes. In order to determine
whether two triangles are similar, you can check the following rules:
1. SSS (Side Side Side) – Two different triangles are similar if all the sides in one triangle are in
the same proportion to the matching sides in the other triangle.
2. SAS (Side Angle Side) – If two triangles have two pairs of sides which have the same
proportion as the pair in the second triangle and the angle between them is the same, they are
similar:
Pair (a) has similar triangles; The missing angle in the triangle on the right is 45° (the interior
angles of a triangle add to 180°), making this triangle an isosceles triangle. Thus, the right side
of the triangle is also 4:
There are two side of the triangles with the same proportion 3/3=4/4=1 and the angle between
those sides is 90° in both of the triangles. Therefore, the triangles are similar according to SAS.
Pair (b) has similar triangles according to SSS. Both triangles have three pairs of matching sides
(Notice that these triangles are also congruent, since all sides are equal - congruent triangles
are also similar triangles).
Pair (c) does not have similar triangles. There are no matching angles between the triangles and
no information regarding their sides.
Therefore, the correct answer is (D) – Pairs (a) and (b) are similar.
To solve this question, you need to remember something called the triangular inequality.
The triangular inequality states that in a triangle, any side of the triangle must be smaller than
the sum of the other sides, and bigger than their difference.
The unit of speed involves two units – distance divided by time. Therefore, to convert one unit
of speed to another, you need to consider both distance and time.
In this question you must convert between miles per hour to yards per minute. Therefore, you
need to convert miles to yards and hours to minutes.
1 mile is 1760 yards. Therefore, to convert from miles to yards, you multiply by 1760.
1 hour is 60 minutes. Therefore, to convert from hours to minutes, you multiply by 60.
Remember the time appears in the bottom, so you divide by it.
In order to compare different units of time you must convert them into a similar time unit.
Notice that each answer choice includes the same time measurements. Convert each of them to
a unit you are comfortable working with. In this case, minutes is a good option:
● 1/6th a day = (24 hours)/6=4 hours=4×60=240 minutes
● 3.5 hours=3.5×60=3×60+0.5×60=180+30=210 minutes
● 250 minutes are already shown in minutes
● 6000 seconds=6000:60=100 minutes
Now that you have all the units shown as minutes, the order is: 100 minutes, 210 minutes, 240
minutes and 250 minutes. After converting them back, the answer is: 6000 seconds, 3.5 hours,
1/6th a day, 250 minutes.
It is given that out of 7 assignments, 2 are always reading assignments. Therefore, the remaining
5 must be writing assignments. That ratio must be kept, thus out of every 7 assignments 5 will
be writing assignments.
Notice that 42 is divisible by 7. In order to get 42 from 7 you need to multiply by 6; 7×6=42.
Therefore, to find the number of written assignments given, you must multiply its part out of 7
(the 5) by 6 as well: 5×6=30.
1
You get the equation . Therefore, the missing number is 1, as 5 =5.
Third row: 1 ounce is 1/16 pound, so 70 ounces=70/16≈4.3 pounds which is less than 5, so it is
definitely less than 5.5 pounds.
To answer this question, you must know the basic properties of exponents:
The straight-to-the-point way to solve this problem would be to add the numbers together and
get the result, which is 255. However, there is a way that is better for handling sums that are
more complicated to calculate.
The given numbers are a finite geometric series. A geometric series is a series with a constant
ratio between following numbers. In other words, when you move from a number to the
following number, you either have to multiply or divide by the same number for the entire
series:
A geometric series has a formula which helps calculate the sum of its n first terms:
In the formula, r is the ratio between successive terms, a is the first term of the series, and n is
the number of terms in the series.
In this question, as shown above, the ratio between successive terms is 2, the first number is 1
and the number of terms is 8. Therefore: a = 1, n=8, r = 2.
When multiplying several rational numbers, you can reduce any number in the numerator with
another number in the denominator. In addition, multiplying two negative numbers results in a
positive number.
