SUMMARY
UNLOCKING POTENTIAL: BRIDGING
GAPS IN UNDERPRIVILEGED
EDUCATION"
Access to quality education remains a
pressing issue for underprivileged children
globally. Limited resources, inadequate
infrastructure, and socio-economic
disparities often create barriers to learning.
Addressing this challenge requires
collaborative efforts, innovative solutions,
and a commitment to providing equal
opportunities for all children, regardless of
their background.
4
SEVERITY OF THE ISSUE
q As many as 32% of slum children drop out of
school early or leave with low levels of literacy
and numeracy. (Source Asha-India).
q A survey conducted across six states of India by
the Pune-based Spherule Foundation has
revealed that nearly 90% of underprivileged
students did not receive proper education during
the pandemic and are now having a hard time
catching up on lost time on education.
q UNESCO 11 May 2023 : Nearly 40% of children
do not have access to education in a language
they understand, and children with disabilities
continue to be disproportionally excluded from
school. Three quarters of all primary-age
children - 9 million- who may never set foot in
school are girls.

RELATED INTERVENTIONS
The interventions that collectively strive to address
the various challenges faced by underprivileged
children in India, promoting inclusive and quality
education are:
q Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA): A government
program aimed at providing universal access to
elementary education in India, focusing on
underprivileged children.
q Pratham Education Foundation: An NGO
working towards improving the quality of
education in India, particularly for
underprivileged children, through innovative
programs and interventions.
q National Child Labour Project (NCLP): A
government initiative to rehabilitate child
laborers by providing them with formal
education and vocational training.
q Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).
What is the take of
Indian society on
this issue?
Indian society recognizes the importance of
educating underprivileged children, viewing
it as a pathway to social equality and
economic progress. Initiatives, both
governmental and non-governmental, strive
to bridge educational gaps by providing
accessible schooling, scholarships, and
vocational training. However, challenges like
poverty and limited resources persist,
hindering widespread change. Efforts to
garner support and awareness continue,
reflecting a collective desire for an inclusive
education system that uplifts the
underprivileged and fosters national
development.

Field Activities
q In this project, our team conducted outreach
activities in various areas, engaging with
numerous underprivileged families within the
community. Our primary goal was to interact
with families who were not sending their
children to school or faced challenges in doing
so.
q We visited different slum areas and migrant
colonies to gather information about these
children and parents. Our objective was to
motivate and encourage these families to enroll
their children in schools operated by the NGO
we partnered with, namely SUBAKSHIKSHA.
This NGO is actively involved in providing free
education to underprivileged students.
q During our outreach efforts, we aimed to
understand the specific obstacles faced by these
families and address them effectively. Our
approach involved motivating parents to
prioritize their children's education and
collaborate with SUBAKSHIKSHA to ensure

access to free educational resources presentation title 9
q Engaging with communities in this
manner signifies our dedication to
making a positive impact on
educational accessibility and overall
community development. By
encouraging families to take
advantage of the educational
opportunities provided by NGOs,
we contribute to breaking the cycle
of poverty and fostering
empowerment within these
communities
