Lesson Plan: Capacitor Number Coding
Teacher: _________________________
Subject: Electronics / EIM / Physics (Electronics Application)
Grade/Level: Senior High School / Technical-Vocational
Date: _____________________________
Time Allotment: 1 Hour
I. Objectives
Explain the significance of capacitor number coding.
Interpret capacitor codes (numerical and letter designations).
Correctly compute the capacitance value given the number code.
Apply knowledge of capacitor coding in identifying actual components.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Capacitor Number Coding
References: Electronics textbooks, datasheets, DepEd K–12 curriculum guide, online
resources
Materials: Actual capacitors, multimeter, chart of capacitor codes, projector/board
III. Procedure
A. Review / Motivation (5 minutes)
• Ask: “Have you seen small capacitors with numbers instead of written values? Why do you
think codes are used instead of writing full values?”
• Show students different capacitors with labels like 104, 223, 472.
B. Lesson Proper (30 minutes)
1. Presentation
• Explain capacitor coding system (EIA standard):
- First two digits = significant figures
- Third digit = multiplier (number of zeros in picofarads, pF)
- Example: 104 → 10 (significant) + 4 (zeros) = 100,000 pF = 100 nF = 0.1 µF
2. Discussion / Guided Practice
• Decode sample capacitor codes with the class:
- 223 = 22,000 pF = 22 nF
- 472 = 4700 pF = 4.7 nF
• Introduce tolerance letters (e.g., J = ±5%, K = ±10%).
3. Hands-on Activity
• Give groups of students actual capacitors with number codes.
• Each group decodes and records values in a worksheet.
• Compare answers and verify using a digital capacitance meter.
C. Generalization (10 minutes)
• Ask students: “What is the importance of learning capacitor codes in electronics repair or
circuit design?”
• Emphasize how proper identification prevents circuit malfunction.
D. Evaluation (10 minutes)
Written Quiz: Decode the following capacitor codes:
1. 1. 102
2. 2. 473
3. 3. 681
4. 4. 224
5. 5. 331
Answer key: 1000 pF = 1 nF, 47,000 pF = 47 nF, 680 pF, 220,000 pF = 0.22 µF, 330 pF
E. Assignment
• Research: Find 5 capacitors at home/school and list down their codes with decoded
values.
