Activity 2 Using the Correct Form of the Word

Situation:

You work as an editing assistant in the Labour Department. Your Department is going to
publish some brochures to promote safety at work. You have drafted the content but you have
made some mistakes about parts of speech, which have been highlighted by your manager.
Correct the mistakes by filling in the blanks with the correct form of word.

SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK

Activity 3 Noun or Verb?

In English, the spelling may show its parts of speech. Verbs can change to nouns in several
ways. Some verbs become nouns by adding the suffix “ -ment” or”-ion”, for example,

Read the following sentences and decide the gap should be filled by a noun or a verb. Then
fill in the gaps with the correct form of words on the left. Also, use the correct tense of the

Learning to swim

As a qualified swimming coach, I would like to bring to the public’s notice the

importance of learning the basics of swimming so that people can be fully enjoy this

healthy sport and avoid accidents.

Swimming should be made compulsory at school. If it is a lack of qualified teachers

and swimming facilities in schools, students should have to take courses are organized

by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

In order to ,become competent swimmers, children must master the basics firstly. The

most important points to remember are the following:

 when practicing a swimming stroke, leaners should try to keep their waste and

thighs close to the surface of the water, to minimize drag and use less of energy;

 learners should extend their hands and arms far forward as possible and raise

their shoulders towards their ears the beginning of a stroke in order to generate

the greatest forward force;

 it is very important learn how to breathe in and out correctly while swimming, as

this extends the ability to cover a long distance.
