n = 3 + 8 → n = 11
ii. n + 5 = 12
n = 12 - 5 → n = 7
iii. 8n = 96
n = 96 ÷ 8 → n = 12
Question 6: Marking Steffan’s Homework
Steffan's answers:
a.
Given: x+7=−2
His steps:
x=−2−7=−9 → ❌
He wrote:
x=−2−7 , which gives x=−9 , but he wrote x=−5
❌ Mistake
Correct answer:
x+7=−2
x=−2−7=−9
So, correct answer: x=−9
b.
Given: x−6=−2
His solution:
x=−2+6=4
But he wrote: x=−8
❌ Mistake
Correct answer:
x−6=−2
x=−2+6=4
So, correct answer: x=4
c.
Given: 5x=−35
His steps:
x=−35÷5=−7
But he wrote: x=7
❌ Mistake
Correct answer:
x=−35/5=−7
So, correct answer: x=−7
Question 7: Solve these equations
a. 2a+3=13
2a=13−3=10
a=10/2=5
Answer: a=5
b. 4a+1=17
4a=17−1=16
a=16/4=4
Answer: a=4
c. 3a−2=13
3a=13+2=15
a=15/3=5
Answer: a=5
d. 4=2c−8
2c=4+8=12
c=12/2=6
Answer: c=6
e. 14=3c+2
3c=14−2=12
c=12/3=4
Answer: c=4
f. 29=4c−3
4c=29+3=32
c=32/4=8
Answer: c=8
Question 8: Think like a mathematician
a.
i. 2a+8=20
ii. 3b+3=24
b.
i. a=6
ii. b=7
Question 9: Isosceles Triangles
Each triangle has two equal sides, so we form an equation by setting those sides
equal.
a.
Equal sides: 2p+1 and 14
2p+1=14
2p=14−1=13
p=13/2=6.5
b.
Equal sides: 4p−54p - 54p−5 and 37
4p−5=37
4p=37+5=42
p=42/4=10.5
c.
Equal sides: 26 and 6p−10
6p−10=26
6p=26+10=36
p=36/6=6
Question 10: Word Problems
a. Write equations:
i. Paul:
Let x be the number of DVDs Paul started with.
x−3=26
ii. Yaz:
Let y be the number of books Yaz started with.
y+5=18
iii. Nial:
Let d be the distance Nial rode on Monday.
2d=48
iv. Jin:
Let Jin's age = j
Jana's age = 2j+3=35
b. Solve the equations:
i.
x−3=26⇒x=26+3=29
Paul started with 29 DVDs.
ii.
y+5=18⇒y=18−5=13
Yaz started with 13 books.
iii.
2d=48⇒d=24
Nial rode 24 km on Monday.
iv.
2j+3=35⇒2j=32⇒j=16
Jin is 16 years old.
Question 11: Kenji’s Cards
We are to form the equation using:
One blue card
One red card
One yellow card
Then solve for m, and choose:
One combination for largest solution of m
One for smallest solution
Let’s try each combination:
1. 4m+4=32
4m=28⇒m=7
2. 2m−6=32
2m=38⇒m=19
3. 6m+2=32
6m=30⇒m=5
4. 4m+4=44
4m=40⇒m=10
5. 2m−6=44
2m=50⇒m=25
6. 6m+2=44
6m=42⇒m=7
7. 4m+4=20
4m=16⇒m=4
8. 2m−6=20
2m=26⇒m=13
9. 6m+2=20
6m=18⇒m=3
Final Answers:
Largest value of m=25 → From: 2m−6=44
Smallest value of m=3 → From: 6m+2=20
