Water demand management (WDM) is crucial for ensuring sustainable water supply and
addressing the challenges posed by increasing urbanization and climate change. This
literature review synthesizes recent research findings related to water demand
management, focusing on the performance of existing water reservoirs, total water
demand assessment, and the evaluation of local policies and management practices.
Performance Assessment of Existing Water Reservoirs
Azad et al. (2022), state that predicting reservoir water levels (RWL) has become
increasingly challenging due to the complex physical processes involved and the spatio-
temporal variations in climatic conditions. The Red Hills Reservoir (RHR), a vital source
of drinking and irrigation water in Thiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, India, is also
anticipated to serve additional productive purposes in the future. However, climate
change in the region may impact the reservoir's long-term viability. Therefore, accurate
and reliable RWL predictions are essential for designing an effective water release
strategy to meet the population's water needs.
Reservoirs play a crucial role as effective structural solutions for managing the spatial
and temporal distribution of water. In addition to supplying water for consumption,
hydroelectric power generation, and irrigation, they also help mitigate floods and
droughts by regulating excessive inflows. However, optimizing reservoir operations is
highly complex, requiring a series of strategic decisions to control water storage and
release over time (Azad et al., 2022).
According to Guo et al. (2021), streamflow forecasting has long been a valuable tool for
managing water scarcity and flood protection. This study introduced an AI-driven
management approach that combines multi-step streamflow predictions with multi-
objective reservoir operation optimization to enhance water resource allocation. The
methodology focused on evaluating both the accuracy of forecasts and the
effectiveness of reservoir operations informed by these predictions, considering the
impact of inflow forecast uncertainty.
