The organisation where I am currently pursuing my internship is ShellGrid Automation Pvt.
Ltd., Pune, a rapidly growing Industrial Automation and Engineering Solutions company.
ShellGrid Automation operates at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and industrial
process management, delivering innovative solutions that optimise manufacturing, power, and
infrastructure operations. The company’s primary mission is to empower industries by

1.2 Internship Duration and Timeline


My internship at ShellGrid Automation Pvt. Ltd., Pune commenced on 9th June 2025 and is
scheduled to conclude on 9th July 2025, making it a year-long engagement. The internship is
structured as a full-time, work-from-office program, which enables me to be completely
immersed in the organisational environment and gain first-hand exposure to industrial
automation projects and operations.
At the time of preparing this report, I have successfully completed 1 month of my internship.
Although the program is still ongoing, the initial phase itself has provided me with significant
learning opportunities and practical insights into automation technologies and industry
practices. The extended nature of this internship differentiates it from typical short-term
programs, as it offers a more in-depth and comprehensive exposure to both the technical and
professional aspects of the field.
This long-term structure also supports progressive skill development: the early months focus
on familiarising myself with the organisation’s tools, processes, and automation systems, while
the subsequent months are designed to involve greater responsibility, independent problem-
solving, and more strategic contributions to ongoing projects.

1.3 Scope of Work


During my internship, I have been working in the Engineering & Project Execution Team at
ShellGrid Automation Pvt. Ltd., Pune, primarily associated with some of the organisation’s key
industrial clients in sectors such as power, food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, and water
treatment. These clients rely on ShellGrid Automation for the design, integration, and
maintenance of PLC, SCADA, and IoT-based automation systems, which are critical for
ensuring efficient and reliable industrial operations.
The client projects I have been exposed to involve the design and implementation of automation
solutions that control and monitor large-scale industrial processes. This scope highlights the
responsibility inherent in the role, as accuracy, safety, and timely execution are of utmost
importance in industrial environments. My role as an Intern Automation Engineer requires not
only technical skill-building but also practical exposure to project workflows and client
interactions, ensuring that automation systems align with client requirements and international
standards.
My responsibilities include:
• Assisting in the programming and configuration of PLCs (Siemens, Allen Bradley, and
Phoenix Contact) for client-specific applications.
• Supporting the development and testing of SCADA and HMI interfaces, enabling real-
time monitoring and control.
• Learning and applying industrial communication protocols such as Modbus and

• Participating in site-based commissioning activities, gaining first-hand experience in
troubleshooting, calibration, and system validation.

programming, and integration of PLC and SCADA solutions for key clients across sectors such
as power, water treatment, and manufacturing.
The opportunities extend beyond programming and configuration. I am actively involved in
understanding client requirements, supporting system design, assisting in testing and
troubleshooting, and contributing to site-level commissioning activities. Many of these
responsibilities involve modifying existing PLC logic, improving SCADA interfaces, and
ensuring that automation solutions meet the client’s operational needs with accuracy, efficiency,
and reliability.
This environment allows me to experience first-hand the multi-faceted responsibilities of an
automation engineer, blending technical implementation, client interaction, and cross-
functional collaboration. The projects provide valuable exposure to how automation systems
are designed, validated, and deployed in real-world industrial environments, offering me the

My role as an Intern Automation Engineer at ShellGrid Automation Pvt. Ltd. involves a wide

fulfilled within the engineering team’s scope, and I actively contribute by assisting in updating

workflows.

The internship is allowing me to build hands-on expertise in industrial automation tools and
platforms, primarily PLC programming software and SCADA development environments.
Additionally, I have been introduced to industrial communication protocols such as Modbus
RTU/TCP and Profibus, which are essential for device integration and data exchange in
automated systems. My role also includes learning to use HMI configuration tools, simulation
environments, and testing utilities, which enable me to validate logic and ensure smooth

timelines are paramount. These projects often involve PLC programming, SCADA system

I also play an active role in preparing and delivering project progress reports, system validation
reports, and commissioning documentation to clients. These reports provide visibility into
automation system performance, SCADA data accuracy, and PLC logic functionality, ensuring
that clients are fully informed about project status and operational reliability.
Additionally, I assist in explaining the logic behind control strategies, SCADA dashboards, and
automation workflows to clients, helping them understand how systems operate and how
performance metrics are measured. This dual role of technical support and client
communication allows me to balance engineering accuracy with client assurance, fostering
trust and confidence in the solutions delivered.
Through this responsibility, I have learned the importance of clear documentation, transparent
communication, and validation of critical industrial systems, which are essential skills for a
professional career in automation engineering.
3. Learning Experience
3.1 Knowledge Acquired
My internship at ShellGrid Automation Pvt. Ltd., Pune is serving as a vital bridge between my
academic learning and real-world professional exposure in industrial automation and control
systems. While my academic coursework provided me with foundational knowledge in PLC
programming, SCADA systems, and industrial IoT, the practical environment of my internship
is enabling me to apply and extend this knowledge to actual industrial projects.
One of the most significant areas of knowledge acquisition has been Phoenix PLC
programming and SCADA development. Prior to this internship, my exposure to hands-on PLC
coding and SCADA interface design was limited. Through daily practical experience, I am
gaining proficiency in writing, testing, and debugging Phoenix PLC programs, configuring
HMI/SCADA dashboards, and integrating field devices with controllers. This hands-on work
allows me to see how theoretical concepts translate into operational solutions.
Additionally, I am building strong expertise in industrial communication protocols such as
Modbus RTU/TCP, which are essential for enabling seamless data exchange between Phoenix
PLCs, sensors, and SCADA systems. I have also become familiar with simulation and testing
tools, which help validate control logic and ensure system reliability before deployment.
Through consistent exposure, I have developed an appreciation for troubleshooting and
debugging. Initially, diagnosing logic errors in Phoenix PLC programs or resolving SCADA
communication issues felt challenging. However, I now approach these problems analytically,
identifying root causes and implementing efficient solutions. This process has significantly
strengthened my problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

Finally, I have gained knowledge in professional reporting and documentation. I have learned
to differentiate between informal notes and formal documentation that meets client and
regulatory standards. Structured, clear, and accurate reporting is critical in my role, as these
documents directly support system reliability, commissioning validation, and client confidence.

The internship is providing me with both technical skills and professional soft skills that are
essential for long-term career development in the field of industrial automation.
On the technical side, I am strengthening my abilities in:

and professional values demonstrated by my colleagues and senior engineers at ShellGrid

driven, which fosters discipline, responsibility, and continuous improvement.
I have observed that qualities such as accuracy, accountability, and effective communication
are critical to success in this role. Given the sensitive nature of industrial automation projects—
where errors in PLC logic, SCADA configurations, or field instrumentation can impact
operational safety and efficiency—integrity, dependability, and attention to detail are non-
negotiable. These are qualities consistently demonstrated by my mentors and team members,
and I am striving to internalize them in my own work.

important, large-scale automation projects—such as commissioning SCADA systems or

protocols, which was initially challenging but ultimately rewarding.
This highlights a common gap between academic training and industry requirements:
theoretical knowledge provides a foundation, but practical environments demand rapid

One of the most significant challenges was adapting to complex industrial automation

development. Engaging in the role of an Intern Automation Engineer, I had the opportunity to

Throughout the internship, I was able to apply concepts from my academic background,
