Types of Consumer Behavior

Consumer behavior means the way people decide what to buy, how they buy, when they buy, and why they

buy a product or service.

There are different types of consumer behavior based on how people think and act while buying. These

behaviors depend on many things like price of the product, interest, needs, wants, past experience, and

emotions.

1. Complex Buying Behavior:

This happens when consumers are highly involved in buying a product. The product is expensive or risky,

and the consumer does a lot of research before buying.

Example: Buying a car, a house, or a laptop.

2. Dissonance-Reducing Buying Behavior:

High involvement but few choices. The buyer fears making a wrong decision.

Example: Buying a washing machine or floor tiles.

3. Habitual Buying Behavior:

Low involvement and the product is bought regularly. No deep thinking or brand loyalty.

Example: Buying toothpaste, soap, salt, or milk.

4. Variety-Seeking Buying Behavior:

Low involvement but many brands. Consumers switch for fun or change.

Example: Biscuits, snacks, shampoo, or ice cream.

5. Impulsive Buying Behavior:

Sudden, unplanned buying based on emotions.

Example: Buying a chocolate bar near the counter or a dress because it looks good.

6. Loyal Consumer Behavior:

Consumers always buy the same brand. They trust and stick to it.

7. Need-Based Consumer Behavior:

Buy only when required. Based on necessity.

Example: Buying medicines, school books, or uniforms.

8. Economic Buying Behavior:

Careful about budget and money. Always looking for discounts and comparing prices.

Example: Comparing prices of vegetables in different shops.

Conclusion:

Understanding consumer behavior helps businesses improve their marketing. It helps in planning better

advertising, pricing, and product strategies.
