I. What is Sensory Overload?

Overcoming an Overwhelming Environment
3

In her pioneering work identifying the root cause of autism, Dr. Temple Grandin determined that autism ultimately stems from Unchecked Sensory Overload. She discovered that the autism she herself experienced, and that is characteristic of the general autistic population, is due to a mental condition that generates an overpowering fear of the environment. Autism sufferers have a chronic fear of their surroundings from which they cannot escape. Their endless attempts to isolate themselves by retreating into familiar surroundings, repetitive behaviors, avoidance of eye contact, and angry panic attacks induced by noise, crowds, light shows, etc. all result from an uncontrollable fright of their surroundings.

II. Understanding Sensory Overload

Disco Fever, Relating to the Autistic Experience

To understand sensory overload let's revisit for a moment our younger days when we enjoyed the club scene. Remember the thrill of entering a dance club and being immersed in sensations. Pulsating music heavy on a pounding beat, swirling lights reflected off a mirrored ball, crowding shoulder to shoulder sweating with sheer delight and animal togetherness, losing touch with the "real world" and swimming in a sensory world of pure emotion. It's time to grab a drink and swing. Wonderful!for a time. But we cannot take this great sensation for too long.

After an hour or two of sensory overload, we have to get out. The pounding beat starts to irritate and I'm getting dizzy from the flashing strobes. Time to take a break, get out for some cool air and quiet. And herein lies the rub. An autistic child wakes up in that disco every morning and can't get out. Sensory overload is on them at all times. All their behaviors are attempts to escape a w o r l d g o n e m a d w i t h s o u n d a n d f u r y .

We are all too familiar with the behaviors: panic attacks, explosive anger, repetitive movements, mild seizures, sleep abnormalities, gastrointestinal irregularities, silence, repeated words, and physical/ social isolation. All are attempts to make sense of a chaotic world and gain self-control. Autistics

III. How the Brain Controls Sensory Overload

The Physiology of Sensory OverloadHow the Brain Controls Fearful Emotions

In our brain fearful emotions are controlled by a tiny organ called the amygdala. It is often referred to as the Anger Management Center.

Fig. 1. Location of the Amygdala in the Brain. The tiny amygdala is located on top of the spinal cord. Nerve signals from the eyes, ears and skin are transmitted to the amygdala where they are analyzed for potential danger.

Here, sensory inputs such a sights, sounds and touch are analyzed for their "danger quotient" and appropriate responses are mounted to escape any perceived d a n g e r.

Unless the reasoning part of the brain instructs the amygdala that the sensation is not dangerous, the amygdala automatically triggers a "fight or flight" response.

We have all experienced the effects of being startled and scared. It's an adrenalin rush. In an instant we are on high alert. We panic and are overpowered with an intense urge to fight or run. At that instant we perceive danger, we are thrust into a state of Acute Sensory Overload.

The image below shows how the amygdale is activated by fear and environmental inputs. This activation manifests itself in people with autism as overpowering fear and uncontrolled emotions.

The Physiology of Sensory OverloadHow the Brain Controls Fearful Emotions

When we see a smile, the amydala is quiet. When we see a frown, it is activated. The level of activity is determined by the intensity of the threat. In the example shown here, smile = low activity (yellow line), frown = higher activity (blue line), fright = highest activity of the amygdala (red line). When the perceived danger passes, we slowly get back into control as normal reason prevails over emotion. This happens when the brain has analyzed the situation and has determined that all is OK. Then the "reasoning" part of the brain sends a signal to the amygdala to shut down. The shut down signals are two inhibitory neurotransmitters called Serotonin and L-Glycine. If we have sufficient quantities of Serotonin and L-Glycine available in our brain, the shut down is rapid and complete. If we do not have enough, the shut down is slow and partial. In this case, the continual sensations we receive from the outside world are never completely inhibited, and we are left in a perpetual state of low level "fight or flight". It is not as intense as a full-blown panic attack, but it is constantly there. In this case we remain in a perpetual state of anxiety. We are experiencing Chronic Sensory Overload. Persons with low levels of Brain Serotonin and L-Glycine are constantly fighting to get back to normal. That is the case with those with autism, chronic anxiety, extreme nervousness and uncontrollable anger.

IV. Defeating Sensory Overload

How Calming Neurotransmitters in the Brain Balance Emotions

There are two ways to combat Chronic Sensory Overload. 1.) Remove or lower the sensations causing overload (isolation) 2.) Elevate levels of Brain Serotonin and Brain L-Glycine The first is accomplished by putting ourselves into a calm, peaceful environment. Lower the lights, turn down the sound, be by yourself, and slow down. It's what we all do when we want to relax or think or sleep. In fact, it is also precisely the classic behavior pattern recognized in autistics. They withdraw into their own private space, away from the bustle, noise and bright lights of our frenetic modern world. In a very real sense, they are self medicating, attempting to achieve a semblance of normalcy by isolation. The second way to remove sensory overload is to elevate levels of Serotonin and L-Glycine in the brain. This is precisely how N-MET works. However, this is not easy to accomplish, since Serotonin (also known as 5-HT) when taken as a dietary supplement cannot get into the brain due to the blood brain barrier. As for L-Glycine, the brain uses about 10 times more Glycine than can be taken in by eating protein or taking dietary supplements containing Glycine.

How Calming Neurotransmitters in the Brain Balance Emotions

KEY CONCEPT:
Serotonin and L-Glycine must be made on site in the brain. Consequently, it is absolutely necessary to provide the brain with natural starting materials (precursors) that can be converted into Serotonin and L-Glycine in the brain itself. Directly ingesting common Serotonin (5-HT) supplements will not elevate serotonin levels in the brain. The same is true for Glycine. N-MET gives the brain exactly what it needs to produce Serotonin and L-Glycine on site, giving the amygdala (Anger Management Center) the neurotransmitters it needs to regulate fearful emotions. Other conditions resulting from Chronic Sensory Overload, such as depression, hyperactivity and low energy, are also effectively treated by the components supplied in N-MET.

V. What is Natural Metabolic Enhancement Therapy?

Balancing Metabolic to Achieve a Better Quality of Life
10

Metabolic Enhancement Therapy identifies and targets metabolic pathways involved in chronic diseases or disorders. The identified pathways are then treated by giving natural dietary supplements that enhance production of the metabolite made by the affected pathway; thereby balancing metabolism. N-MET is a formulation that works with the nervous system to reduce a number of detrimental behaviors often associated with autism, ADD, ADHD and chronic anxiety syndromes. Those who suffer from these disorders are typically over stimulated by the sights, sounds and contacts in their environment. The result is a loss of mental focus and emotional control. N-MET works by enhancing the synthesis of inhibitory neurotransmitters that normally regulate emotion, excitability, fear, anger and anxiety. The dietary supplements provided by N-MET stimulate metabolic pathways that produce these inhibitory neurotransmitters. As a result, nervous impulses are modulated and regulated, allowing users to more fully control their emotions and relieve stress. Furthermore, N-MET contains natural metabolites that build and sustain the optimum energy levels required for peak mental focus and productivity. The combined effects of mental calm and sustained energy promote a positive and confident mood. This novel N-MET formula (Patent Pending) has never before been made available to the public, and is not presumed to cure disease. It is offered as an effective dietary supplement that helps release individuals from emotional overload and mental confusion. Because excessive emotional stress can be experienced by anyone, N-MET can help rebalance the emotional state of anyone experiencing chronic anxiety, anger, nervous stress and persistent fatigue.

VI. Summary

11

Sensory Overload is the root cause of many Autistic behaviors Autistic behavior is caused by an unrelenting fear of the environment Fearful emotions are controlled by the amygdala When the amygdala is activated it causes fearful, anxious and stressful emotions The two neurotransmitters responsible for controlling the amygdala are Serotonin and L-Glycine Low quantities of Serotonin and L-Glycine result in insufficient shutdown of the amygdala, causing Chronic Sensory Overload Serotonin CANNOT enter the brain due to the blood brain barrier Sufficient amounts of Glycine CANNOT be obtained from diet or supplements to serve brain function BOTH SEROTONIN AND L-GLYCINE MUST BE MADE ON-SITE IN THE BRAIN N-METs patent pending, proprietary formula is the only available supplement that provides the brain with the natural starting materials necessary to produce the required calming neurotransmitters N-METs formula contains all the necessary ingredients to provide relief from sensory overload, calm, focus, and energy

IX. A Note From Joel

Learning and Understanding are the first steps to Overcoming Autism. And if youve made the decision to read this report youve done just that.

14

But with all the promises out there from companies that claim to offer relief for Autistics youre smart for being skeptical. After all youre here to help your child, yourself, or a loved one. All of us have been skeptical. Were all frightened for the future of our children or loved ones because in this amazing technological world there is no cure for us. So what do we do? Do we give up? No. We cannot. These are our children. So we try everything. And theres no way to know if something is going to work for you until you try it. I know the real risk of trying new products focused on Autism: that it wont work, its just another failure, your hope is crushed like mine was so many times before. But we all know the alternative is to do nothing. Even if youre trying other therapies right now, as I did with my child for 15 years, please take me up on my offer and try N-MET. I believe you will experience the same results I and hundreds of others have. If Im wrong, and you see no positive results from N-MET, so what? Send me an email and I will refund your money, no questions asked. That will be the end of it. You have nothing to lose.

If you have any questions at all please feel free to email me directly at this email address: [email protected], or visit the Contact Us page at www.N-MET.com. All emails are forwarded directly to me and Dr. Birk.
