FABRIC STRUCTURES
Definition: A structure where the exterior shell is a fabric material spread over a framework. The fabric is maintained in tension in all directions to provide stability.
Types of Fabric structures: Saddle roof, Mast supported, arch supported, point supported, combinations
PROS:
Translucence Clear Span Capabilities (no intermediate support and fewer details) Lightweight structure Unique designs (easily get the attention of people with its formal aspect) Resistant overtime if made and installed properly. Produced off-site, quick to install Light reflectance and transmission also offer exciting possibilities for lighting after dark Insulation
CONS:
Large foundations often required to prevent the roof to fly away.
Little or no rigidity Loss of tension is dangerous for stability
Possible fabric materials: -PVC coated polyester (polyvinylchloride) = less, expensive, 15 to 20 year life span, easy to erect, variety of colors, weights, topcoats and textures, fire resistant -Silicon coated glass = higher tensile strength, subject to damage from flexing, 30+ year life span -Teflon coated glass P.T.F.E (polytetrafluroethylene) = Similar to silicon glass, more resistant to damage, large scale permanent structures, non-combustible, waterproof, resists UV and rays, chemically inert
ETFE = High transparency (97%), over 25 year life span, self-cleaning, single or multi-layers
