July/August 2012

Dear Church Family and friends, Like many folks, I watched several classic military movies over the Memorial Day weekend. I enjoyed watching The Dirty Dozen, Midway and The Green Berets. In one powerful scene from The Green Berets a young woman poses as a prostitute to lure an enemy general to a secluded place where he can be captured by the South Vietnamese and American special forces. One of the S. Vietnamese leaders (played by Jack Soo) recognizes the woman as his sister-in-law. He is both angered and ashamed by her behavior, John Wayne takes him aside and tells him that her future and dignity are on the line and just like everyone else in the war she was doing what she had to do in order to get the job done. Jack Soo reaffirms her as a person and tells her that he is proud to have such a brave woman as a part of his family then she hugs him and weeps. This reminded me of a similar event shared between me and a now-departed Christian friend and mentor. I was a Sunday School teacher, a restaurant manager, and somebody that a lot of folks looked up to. I did a very regrettable, embarrassing, stupid thing, and it was made public in a local newspaper. I was ashamed to show my face in town. My friend, Estil walked to my home and reminded me that we all make mistakes and said the situation reminded him of JohnMark who had made a mistake by quitting on his missionary journey with Paul and Barnabbas. He was embarrassed and wanted to try to make things right - but Paul wouldnt hear of it so John-Mark was not traveling with Paul. Barnabbas decided to reaffirm the value of John-Mark and took him under his wing electing not to travel with Paul. We later discover that John-Mark began traveling with the Apostle Peter and many believe that he became the author of Peters memoirs of sort the Gospel according to Mark. Estil shared, I am sure glad that Barnabbas did not wash his hands of John-Mark just because of one mistake. He then shared, Bill, I know you are embarrassed and that you made a mistake but, youre a good man and I know God still plans to use you. This storm will pass. Then he hugged me and told me that he loved me and appreciated my work in the church. Tears rolled down both our cheeks. So as you read through the Gospel of Mark in our July chapter-a-day readings remember that God needs Pauls but he also needs far more Barnabbass to be encouragers of those who stumble in their walk with the Lord. Paul made a few mistakes of his own, but was not as gracious as God had been toward him on the Damascus Road. Perhaps Barnabbas connected John-Mark with Peter, who had also failed a time or two? Maybe Peter was the better mentor that God chose to encourage and travel with John-Mark? As you read through Marks gospel, ask God to show you somebody who needs your encouragement, affirming word, and hug. Graciously yours,

Pastor Bill

Gems of Wisdom from Our Seniors

I went to the church yard sale and I purchased a Veggie Tales DVD. On that DVD there was a song that the Veggie Tales version of Joshua sang when they entered the Promise Land and took down the walls of Jericho. The words went something like this: The Lord has given this land to us. No need to fuss. He knows what Hes doing. We know that He will take care of us if we follow Him. I think that Veggie Tales are for people of all ages and that there is a message in there for America. God has given us this land and we need to follow Him! Peggy Phillips

Thank you all for the prayers and concerns for me while I was sick. I really appreciated the cards the childrens Sunday School class made for me.
