WHAT IS BLUETOOTH?
Bluetooth wireless technology is an open specification for a low-cost, low-power, short-range radio technology for ad-hoc wireless communication of voice and data anywhere in the world.
Short-range radio frequency technology that operates at 2.4 GHz on an unlicensed Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) band. Effective range of Bluetooth devices is 10 meters. It was originally conceived as a wireless alternative to data cables.

Bluetooth Protocol Stack
Bluetooth Protocol Stackcontd.
Radio Layer( physical layer) Transmit/receive packets on physical Channel Transforms streams of bits between physical channel & baseband.
Baseband and Link Control The Baseband and Link Control layer enables the physical link between Bluetooth units forming a piconet. Bluetooth uses FHSS where packets are transmitted on defined frequencies in defined time slots
Provides asynchronous and synchronous logical connections
10
Takes care of encoding / decoding , Encryption etc
Bluetooth Protocol Stackcontd.
Link Manager Protocol The link manager protocol is responsible for creation, modification and release of links between Bluetooth devices. Authentication and encryption Controls the power modes and the connection states of a Bluetooth unit.
Logical Link Control and Adaptation Protocol (L2CAP) The Bluetooth logical link control and adaptation protocol (L2CAP) adapts upper layer protocols over the Baseband. L2CAP provides connection-oriented and connectionless data services to the upper layer protocols with protocol multiplexing capability. Segmentation and reassembly operation. 11 Group abstractions.
Bluetooth Protocol Stackcontd.
Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) Provide the basis for all the usage models. Using SDP, device information, services and the characteristics of the services can be queried and after that, a connection between two or more Bluetooth devices can be established. RFCOMM RFCOMM is a serial line emulation protocol and is based on ETSI 07.10 specification. This cable replacement protocol emulates RS-232 control and data signals over Bluetooth.
12
Typical Bluetooth Scenario
Bluetooth will support wireless point-topoint and point-to-multipoint (broadcast) between devices in a piconet. Point to Point Link
Master - slave relationship Bluetooth devices can function as masters or slaves
Piconet
It is the network formed by a Master and one or more slaves (max 7) Each piconet has max capacity (1 Mbps)s
s
13
Ad-hoc Network the Scatternet
Inter-piconet communication Up to 10 piconets in a scatternet
Multiple piconets can operate within same physical space
This is an ad-hoc, peer to peer (P2P) network

ADVANTAGES OF BLUETOOTH
Data Transfer is free of charge and not added to our budget. It allow us to stay cord free. It has the ability to keep our information private.
Bluetooth isn't requires a line of sight.
Facilitates data & voice communication Easy to use Bluetooth is also low power and low processing with an 21 overhead protocol.
DISADVANTAGES OF BLUETOOTH
Relatively short range
Less secure Interference with other devices Mediocre Data rates Bluetooth internet connection gets slow sometimes
22
Future Of Bluetooth
Bluetooth has a good future ahead because it meets a basic need of connectivity.
Currently a protocol is being researched that would support large ad hoc networks. Latest version of Bluetooth are improving both its security and capabilities. Ultra wide band has been chosen by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group as the future of Bluetooth Technology. New versions of Bluetooth technology will meet the high-speed and large range. 23
Conclusion
A new global standard for data and voice
Eliminates Cables. Low Power, Low range, Low Cost network devices. Bluetooth seems to have a bright future after reviewing its benefits and wide use. Further improvements are planned to be made in Data Rates Power Reduction Range
