What is logical consequences?
An approach that is designed to take the power struggle and resentment out of dealing with misbehavior.
Logical consequences are situations engineered/created by the person in authority. The situations are logically connected to the wrong. It is logical because it "fits" the offense (misbehavior) .
Consequences are outcomes (negative or positive) of a person's action.
You break it, you fix it (Chong jiggles the table, the water spills. Teacher asks her to clean it up) Loss of Privilege (Hilmi is responsible to lead his friend to walk in line to the canteen for a week, but he disobeys. Teacher take out the privilege) Positive Time-Out (Mark disrupts a math lesson by making noises. The teacher sends him to the time-out place)
Assumption: All misbehavior is the result of a student's assumption how to find a place and gain status in the classroom.
Main focus: To create a democratic classroom environment where students feel the sense of belonging.
Punishment is not suitable as it may show the way the teacher to seek for revenge, to show their power and to embarrass the students.
To seek attention
To show inadequacy
Goals of Misbehavior
To gain power
To seek revenge
Teachers Strategies
Communicate/talk about positive things Give motivation and encouragement Be optimistic
Be proud with students achievement
Co-operate with students
Identify students weaknesses
Believe in students strength/ability
Change the way of teaching
Use reinforcement in class
How to apply logical consequences in classroom?
Logical consequences uphold the principle of students should be given choices in changing their misbehavior and should be forced to behave according to what they were told to do.
Thus, students become more responsible.
E.g. 1: Ezron pushes Vexter when they are walking down the stairs. Teachers Action: Give Ezron choices (A) not to push his friends again (B) wait for his turn to go down after his friends E.g. 2: Laurence disturbs his friends during class.
Teachers Action: Give Laurence choices (A) not to disturb his friends again (B) being isolated by his friends
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
Foster autonomy in which students are responsible for their actions and their choices. Create a conducive learning environment through open communication and respecting each other.
Weaknesses
Quite difficult for teachers to identify and understand the motives of students misbehavior in the beginning. Quite difficult to identify suitable logical consequences to the misbehavior.
