Continuing Professional Development What Why How

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. It is important for maintaining and developing skills over the course of one's career. CPD can take both formal and informal forms, including accredited courses, conferences, networking, and reading professional literature. Effective CPD involves identifying learning needs, pursuing learning activities to address them, and reflecting on what was learned and how it can be applied. While CPD brings benefits like career advancement, there are also potential barriers like lack of time, money, or employer support. The key is defining one's own personalized CPD approach.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

What? Why? How?

What's the plan?

What is CPD? Why is it important? How can we go about it?

Defining CPD...
CPD is:
'a combination of approaches, ideas and techniques that will help you manage your own learning and growth.'

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)

Defining CPD...
CPD should focus on the outcome: 1. Identify the need for CPD 2. Do something about it 3. Reflect! What did you learn? How have you applied what you learnt in real life?

Defining CPD...
There is not a one size fits all approach to CPD:

Wherever you are in your career now, and whatever you want to achieve, your CPD should be exactly that: yours.
