Types of Computers Explained

There are three types of computers based on their principles of operation: analog computers, digital computers, and hybrid computers. Analog computers operate on continuous ranges of values and deal with physical variables. Digital computers operate using binary numbers and are well-suited for complex engineering problems. Hybrid computers exhibit features of both analog and digital computers, using a digital controller and analog solver.

(Based on Principles of Operation)

THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT TYPES

OF COMPUTERS ACCORDING TO THE
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION. THOSE
THREE TYPES OF COMPUTERS ARE :
Analog

computers
Digital computers
Hybrid computers

ANALOG COMPUTERS

A computing device that

works on continuous
range of values

The results given will

only be approximate
since they deal with
quantities that vary
continuously

It generally deals with

physical variables such
as voltage, pressure,
temperature, speed, etc.

SOME MORE

An analog
computer can
work both
mechanically
and
electronically
. Mechanical
analog
computers
have existed
for
thousands of
years, with
the oldest
known
example
being the
Antikythera.
This is a
Greek
machine,
thought to
have been
made around
100 BC,
designed for
calculating
astronomical
positions.

DIGITAL COMPUTERS

It operates on digital
data such as numbers
It uses binary number
system in which there
are only two digits 0
and 1. Each one is
called a bit.
Digital computer is
well suited for solving
complex problems in
engineering and
technology.
They have an
increasing use in the
field of design,
research and data
processing

BASED ON THE PURPOSE, DIGITAL COMPUTERS

CAN BE FURTHER CLASSIFIED AS :
General Purpose Computers
They are used for any type of applications,
can store different programs and do the jobs
as per the instructions specified on those
programs. Most of the computers that we see
today are general purpose computers.
Special Purpose Computers
Special purpose computer is one that is built
for a specific application

ANALOG COMPUTERS V/S DIGITAL

COMPUTERS
Analog Computers
It works in parallel.
This means it can
carry out multiple
tasks
simultaneously.
It handles
continuous variables

Digital Computers

It can only perform

one calculation at
any one instant. The
only way around this
parallel computing,
where a single
machine has
multiple processors.
It works with
*Discrete numbers are those which are either whole numbers;
*discrete numbers
those where the decimal fractions are either limited such as one

eighth being 0.125; or those which have sequences which repeat,

such as one-sixth being 0.1666 recurring

HYBRID COMPUTERS

Hybrid computers
are computers that
exhibit features of
analog computers and
digital computers. The
digital component
normally serves as
the controller and
provides logical
operations, while the
analog component
normally serves as a
solver of differential
equations

It offers a costeffective method of

performing complex
simulations. A hybrid
computer capable of
real-time solution has
been less expensive
than any equivalent
digital computer.
Hybrid computers
have been necessary
for successful system
development. Hybrid
Machines are
generally used in
scientific applications
or in controlling
industrial processes

SOME MORE

An
example
of a
hybrid
compute
r is the
compute
r used in
hospitals
to
measure
the
heartbea
t of the
patient.
