Sensors
Sensors are simple electronic devices
that detect and convert a change in
pressure, temperature, or mechanical
movement into an electrical signal
Pressure sensors
THERE ARE 4 BASIC TYPES OF SENSORS
- Pressure
- Temperature
- Position
- Speed
Pressure sensors
Pressure Sensors measure changes in pressure
and send a variable DC voltage to the ECM
They have 3 wires
5 V +/- 0.5 V

to 4.5 V
Pressure sensors
The key pressure sensors one the
engine are:
- Oil Pressure sensor
Determine oil pressure for the oil map
- Boost Pressure sensor
This pressure is needed to calculate the exact quantity of fuel (FRC)
- Atmospheric Pressure sensor
This sensor is the reference point for the gauge pressure of all the other
pressure sensors
Temperature sensors
The important temperature sensors
on the engine are:
- Fuel temperature sensor
Determines fuel temperature to make correction to the
fuel rate ( Fuel temp compensation )
- Coolant temperature sensor
Determines coolant temperature for ( cold mode )
Position sensor
An example of a position sensor is the

Pulse width modulation
The position sensor monitors the position of the
throttle and send a PWM signal to the ECM
The ECM determines if the
sensor is faulty by
monitoring the Duty Cycle
If the duty cycle is Less
than 5% or More than 95%
the ECM will log and Active
