TRANSFORMATIONS
MCKENAH WHALEN
TEKS FOR 8TH GRADE
(10) TWO-DIMENSIONAL SHAPES. THE STUDENT APPLIES MATHEMATICAL PROCESS STANDARDS
TO DEVELOP TRANSFORMATIONAL GEOMETRY CONCEPTS. THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO:
(A) GENERALIZE THE PROPERTIES OF ORIENTATION AND CONGRUENCE OF ROTATIONS,
REFLECTIONS, TRANSLATIONS, AND DILATIONS OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL SHAPES ON A
COORDINATE PLANE;
(B) DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN TRANSFORMATIONS THAT PRESERVE CONGRUENCE AND THOSE
THAT DO NOT;
(C) EXPLAIN THE EFFECT OF TRANSLATIONS, REFLECTIONS OVER THE X- OR Y-AXIS, AND
ROTATIONS LIMITED TO 90, 180, 270, AND 360 AS APPLIED TO TWO-DIMENSIONAL SHAPES
TRANSFORMATIONS
A TRANSFORMATION CAN BE DESCRIBED AS A TURN, FLIP, OR A SLIDE OF AN
OBJECT.
EXAMPLE OF A
TRANSFORMATION:
DILATION
A dilation is when you change the
size of an object but not the shape
of it.

TRANSLATION
Translation- simply
sliding an object in any
particular direction
without altering its shape
or size.
EXAMPLE OF A TRANSLATION
In the picture shown the
original coordinates for points
A, B, and C are A-(-3,4), B-(1,2), C-(-3,2). After the
translation was performed the
coordinates for each point
changed. The new
coordinates are A-(1,-2), B-(3,4), C-(1,-4).

REFLECTION
Reflections are seen as the
mirror image. When you
look at an image that has
been reflected it will appear
as though you are looking at
the mirrored image of that
object.
EXAMPLE OF A REFLECTION
In the picture below you
see the REFLECTION of the
sun and trees on the top of
the water
In the picture above it appears as
though you are looking through a
mirror and viewing the image of
yourself in the opposite direction.

ROTATIONS
Rotation- defined as an object that is moved in a
circular motion around a fixed point. Meaning the
center point will remain the same as you are
rotating the object.
EXAMPLE OF A ROTATION
A great example of a rotation
would be the movement of Earth.
Earth rotates in a circular motion
around the sun which provides us
with days and nights.
