Question 1: In what ways does your
media product, use, develop or
challenge forms & conventions of real
media products?
What did we find out and what codes and
conventions were common in our chosen genre?
For our genre (action/thriller), we found out that typography in films for this genre are usually bold and the font
colour of the titles and credit list are usually red and this shows that the font has connotations with death, danger
and violence. These are all shown with are film and so we decided to also use a red font for our credit list and the
title of our film to clearly show the connotations of danger.
We also found out that in the opening of action/thriller films there is a lot of action going on. In our media product,
we start the opening with action as the Detective is running away from the silent killer.
The main code that was used in our chosen genre was the enigma code. This mainly created tension as in most
action/thriller films it was unclear who the killer was as the killer is not shown but there is a voice over of the killer .
It was also unclear what will happen next in the film.
What filmed inspired us for our
opening sequence?
Our opening sequence was inspired by the film Taken. One way that Taken links to our film, Guilty or
not is the storyline as the Detectives are still trying to figure out what is going on. We also watched the
opening sequence of the film taken 3 to help us with more ideas of our opening sequence
Also the lighting in their logo and their typography is dark blue which is also used in some parts of our
logo and title of our film. Also in the opening credits of Taken, they start telling the story. This is used
in our film as we have used quotes such as 'one death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic.'
This shows the 9
Key moments of our film
How have we developed our sequence to match that of
real movies from the same genre?
We developed our sequence to match that of real movies from same genres by including
action straight away in the film. This is shown when the Detective is running away from the
killer. We also use sound effects of the detective screaming. After this, we used a voice over
where the killer explains what they have done and what they are hiding from the detectives.
Our film includes the enigma code as it is unclear who the killer is because the audience do
not see the killers voice as they can only hear the killers voice in the background. Also, our
film includes clues through mise-en-scene as the victim has bruising on her neck. The clues
are also shown through the dialogue of the detectives as they discuss the other victims that
the killer has killed. This matches real life movies of action/thriller films as the main code
they use is the enigma code.
The pictures shows how our film starts with action and how taken also starts with action
straight away in their opening sequence.
