Refrigeration Systems Overview

The document discusses refrigeration systems and their components. It defines refrigeration as cooling a space or substance below the environmental temperature. It then explains that a refrigeration system consists of four main components - a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator - through which a refrigerant flows in a cycle, absorbing heat from the surroundings to produce cooling. It lists different methods of refrigeration and describes the vapor compression system, identifying its five key components as the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator, and refrigerant.

REFRIGERATION

SYSTEM
Group 3
Refrigeration
Isa branch of science
that deals with the
process of cooling of a
space or substance
below the
environmental
temperature
Refrigeration System
Isan assembly of 4 major
components, namely the
compressor, condenser,
expansion valve and evaporator
through which a very low
substance flow in a cycle and
absorbs heat from the
immediate surroundings,
thereby producing the cooling
effect.
Methods of Refrigeration
1. Ice Refrigeration
2. Mechanical Refrigeration
3. Absorption Refrigeration
4. Air Cycle Refrigeration
5. Steam Jet Refrigeration
Mechanical Refrigeration
Is the removal of heat by
utilizing a refrigerant subjected
to cycles of refrigerating
thermodynamics and employing
mechanical compressor.
Vapor Compression System
Components of Vapor
Compression System
1. Compressor
2. Condenser
3. Expansion Valve
4. Evaporator
5. Refrigerant
Compressor
-heart of the vapor compressor
system.
-types are reciprocating, rotary,
and centrifugal.
Condenser
-receives superheated refrigerant
from the compressor, remove the
superheat and then liquefy the
refrigerant.
-ultimate point of heat rejection
from the refrigeration system.
-can be air-cooled or water-
cooled
Expansion Valve
-reduce the pressure of the
liquid refrigerant
-regulate the flow of refrigerant
to the evaporator.
Evaporator
-is a heat exchanger which
transfers heat from the
substance being cooled to a
boiling refrigerant.
-removes heat from air,water, or
some other substance.
Refrigerant
- Is a substance which produces a
refrigerating effect by its
absorption of heat while
expanding or evaporating.
