Problems
1. A Cippolletti weir of crest length 0.5 m .The head of water
over the weir is 0.4m .find the discharge over the weir if the
channel is of 80 cm wide and 60 cm deep . take Cd=0.6.
9C304.42 7
Solution
Given data
Crest length L = 0.5m
Head over weir H = 0.4m
Channel width B = 80cm = 0.8m
Channel depth D = 60cm = 0.6m
C/S area of channel A = B x D = 0.8 x 0.6 =0.48m
9C304.42 8
If the velocity of approach is neglected ,
Q = 2/3 x 0.6 x 0.5 x 2X 9.81 (0.4)3/2
= 0.224 m3/sec.
Velocity of approach is considered
Va = Q/A = 0.224/0.48 = 0.47 m/sec.
9C304.42 9
• Head due to velocity of approach
ha = Va 2 /2g
= (0.47) 2 /2 x 9.81=0.011m
• Discharge over the weir (considering velocity of
approach)

Q = 2/3 x 0.6 x 0.5 x 2X 9.81 [ (0.4+0.011) 3/2 - (0.011) 3/2 ]
= 0.232 m3/sec.
9C304.42 11
2. The water is discharging over a weir 4m long under a
constant head of 800m.m.using Bazins formula
,determine the discharge over a weir if the channel
approaching the weir is 5m wide and 1m deep.
9C304.42 12
Solution
Given data:
Length of weir L = 4m
Head over the weir H = 800m.m = 0.8m
Depth of channel = 5m
Depth of water in the channel = 1m
Area of flow channel = 5 x 1 =5m2
Since, Length of weir < width of channel ,
No. of end contractions = 2
If the velocity of approach is neglected,
9C304.42 13
Bazin’s formula
Q = m 2g (L-0.1nH) H3/2
m = 0.405 + 0.003/0.8 = 0.4088.
Q = 0.4088 (4 - 0.1 x 2 0.8 ) 0.83/2 2 x 9.81
= 4.975 m3/sec.
9C304.42 14
Velocity of approach
Va = Q/A = 4.975/5 = 0.995 m/sec
ha = Va2/2g =(0.995) 2 /2 x 9.81 =0.051m
If velocity of approach is considered
Q = m1 2 g (L-0.1nH1) (H1) 3/2
9C304.42 15
m1 = 0.405+ 0.003/H1
H1 = H + ha =0.8 + 0.051= 0.851m
m1 = 0.405 + 0.003 / 0.851 = 0.4085
Q = 0.4085 2X 9.81 (4-0.1 x 2 x 0.851)[(0.851) 3/2 -
(0.051) 3/2 ]
Q = 5.36 m3/sec.
