Thermometer: by A.J.Abubakkar Siddique

This document discusses different types of thermometers used to measure body temperature. It describes digital thermometers that can be used orally, rectally, or under the arm and provide fast, accurate readings. Electronic ear thermometers measure temperature inside the ear through infrared heat detection. Forehead thermometers are placed on the forehead's temporal artery to read infrared heat from the head, though they may be less reliable than digital thermometers. Thermometers have evolved over time and are now widely used in science, medicine, technology, and industry.

Introduction

 A thermometer is a device that measures temperature or a temperature gradient. A

thermometer has two important elements:
 (1) a temperature sensor (e.g. the bulb of a mercury-in-glass thermometer or the
digital sensor in an infrared thermometer) in which some change occurs with a
change in temperature;
 (2) some means of converting this change into a numerical value (e.g. the visible
scale that is marked on a mercury-in-glass thermometer or the digital readout on
an infrared model
Types of thermometers

 Digital thermometers
 Electronic ear thermometer
 Forehead thermometers
 Plastic “fever” strip thermometers
 And etc
Digital thermometer

 You can get the fastest and most accurate results with a digital thermometer.
 There is a sensor on the end of the thermometer that touches the body part and reads
the body’s temperature. You can use a digital thermometer in 3 ways:
 Oral (in the mouth)
 Rectal (in the bottom)
 Axillary (under the arm)
 Do not use the same thermometer for both oral and rectal readings. Be sure to label your
thermometer either “oral” or “rectal” to know the difference.
Electronic ear thermometer

 This thermometer measures the temperature inside of the ear. It will read the
infrared heat that comes from inside of the ear.
Forehead thermometers

 This is also used to measure temperature, but they may not be as reliable as the digital
thermometers. Forehead thermometers are placed on the temporal artery of the
forehead and will read the infrared heat that comes off of the head.
Conclusion

 Thermometers are widely used in technology and industry to monitor processes,

in meteorology, in medicine, and in scientific research.
 Some of the principles of the thermometer were known to Greek philosophers of
two thousand years ago. The modern thermometer gradually evolved from
the thermoscope with the addition of a scale in the early 17th century and
standardization through the 17th and 18th centuries.
