Advantages of Wireless Technology

Wireless technology uses radio waves to transmit data without wires. It includes technologies like smartphones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID, and GPS. Wireless networks reduce costs, increase efficiency, and allow for mobile workforces. The main wireless technologies are RFID, Bluetooth, WiMax, and Wi-Fi. RFID uses radio waves to track items without contact. Bluetooth created in 1994 as a cable alternative and uses frequency hopping. Wi-Fi uses the IEEE 802.11 standard for local wireless networks. WiMax provides mobile broadband over longer distances. Wireless networks provide benefits for business including employee mobility, lower installation costs, and competitive advantages, but also pose security, stability, and health effect disadvantages.

WIRELESS

TECHNOLOGY
Wireless
Technology
Technology that uses radio waves to
transmit data.
Examples:
● Smartphones

● Wi-Fi

● Bluetooth

● RFID

● GPS
Business value of wireless
technology

● Reduces costs
● Increases efficiency
● Creates a mobile workforce
● Facilitates communication
between employees and
customers
Types of wireless
technologies

●RFID: Radio Frequency

Identification.

● Bluetooth technology

● Wimax technology

● Wi-Fi
RFID

● Officially patented in 1973.

● Wireless non-contact system.

● Uses radio waves.

Bluetooth

● Created by Ericsson in 1994.

● Created as an alternative to data cables.

● Uses Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum

(FHSS).

● Multi- device connectivity and wireless

synchronization.
Wi-Fi

● Another word for WLAN.

● IEEE 802.11 Standard.

● First used in 1991 by AT&T and NCR

Corporations.

● The WiFi Alliance.

Wimax

● Wireless communication standard designed to

provide data at 30-40 Mbits/sec

● More commonly known as 3G & 4G.

● Portable mobile broadband.

● IEEE 802.16 standard.

Wi-Fi vs. Wimax

● Both are somewhat similar.

● Although WIMAX is on a much larger
scale.
● WiFi ranges few 100 feet at around 50-60
Mbps
● WIMAX ranges at about 40 miles at
70mbps.
● Biggest advantage for WIMAX is the
option of mobility.
Business Applications of Wireless
Technology

RFID
● Inventory and asset tracking. E.g.: Wal-

Mart.

● Agricultural purposes such as tracking

cattle.

● Hospitals can track patient’s medication

Business Applications of Wireless
Technology

Bluetooth
● Bluetooth Headsets and Hands free

system in automobiles.
● Wireless Keyboard and mice systems.

● Office systems such as scanners, printers

etc can be wirelessly linked.

Business Applications of Wireless
Technology

Wi-Fi
● Best suited for smaller businesses

● Cost effective

● Remote mouse.

● Speedy transactions with the help of

PDAs. E.g.: Carrefour.

Business Applications of Wireless
Technology

Wimax
● Mobility!

● High-speed internet access and better

range.
● Push email service for Smartphone users.

E.g.: Blackberry, I phone etc.

Business Applications of Wireless
Technology

● Wifi in the Sky.

Advantages of Wireless
Technology

● Employee mobility
● Lower cost of installation
● Competitive advantage
● Disaster recovery
Disadvantages of wireless
technology

● Lack of security
