WHAT IS A CLUTCH?
A clutch is a mechanical device that provides for
the transmission of power (and therefore usually
motion) from one component (the driving
member) to another (the driven member) when
engaged, but can be disengaged. Clutches are
used whenever the transmission of power or
motion must be controlled either in amount or
over time (e.g., electric screwdrivers limit how
much torque is transmitted through use of a
clutch; clutches control whether automobiles
transmit engine power to the wheels).
TYPES OF CLUTCH
Some types of clutches used in vehicles are given
below :
(a) Friction Clutch : It may be
(i) single plate clutch, (ii) multi-plate clutch, or (iii)
cone clutch. Multi-plate clutch can be either wet or
dry.
(b) Centrifugal clutch.
(c) Semi-centrifugal clutch.
(d) Hydraulic clutch.
(e) Positive clutch.
(f) Vacuum clutch.
(g) Electromagnetic clutch.
FUNCTIONS OF A CLUTCH
Function of transmitting the torque from the
engine to the drivetrain.
Smoothly deliver the power from the engine
to enable smooth vehicle movement.
Perform quietly and to reduce drive-related
vibration.
Protect the drivetrain when given the
inappropriate use.
Used as a partial brake during uphill motion
of a car.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
• Single plate dry clutch.
• Specifications:
Thickness: 2mm
Diameter: 100 mm
• Friction clutches type- many clutches rely on
friction. Main purpose is to connect a moving
member to another that is moving at a different
speed or stationary
• Dry clutch - not bathed in liquid and uses friction
to engage.
Working
Material
• Clutch plate and pressure plates are usually
made from steel.
• Clutch disc made of steel with a friction material.
• Five different types of friction material used:
• Organic- mix of fiberglass and other materials
(brass) molded or woven into a friction pad.
• Kevlar - synthetic fibers, long lasting.
• Ceramic - mix of silicon dioxide and various
metals and additives.
• Feramic - fairly similar to ceramic material,
contains a much larger percentage of metal
• FeramAlloy, which is a new and superior
alternative to feramic and ceramic clutch
material
Factors
• Friction coefficient: how well a clutch disc will
hold onto a flywheel. If the coefficient is low, the
clutch disc will slip against the flywheel and wear
away.
• Clamping force: the amount of force or weight
that must be applied to a given clutch disc to
make sure it doesn't slip against the flywheel.
• Fade temperature: Temperature at which the
clutch material begins to lose cohesion. Low
temperature ruins the clutch disc.
Advantages
• This clutch responds very fast.
• It generates low heat, so non need of cooling
medium
Disadvantages
• Torque transmitting capacity is very less.
• This is old type of clutch.
• Not used in small vehicles
