Industrial Engineering Overview

Industrial engineering is concerned with designing integrated systems involving people, materials, equipment, and energy. It draws on specialized knowledge from various fields to specify, predict, and evaluate results from production systems. [1] Industrial engineering has evolved from simple handicraft production to today's computerized systems through major developments like the industrial revolution. [2] An introduction to industrial engineering and management covers topics like production system design, production planning and control, forecasting, quality management, and facilities layout. [3]

Introduction to Industrial

Engineering and Management

Definition and Concept of Industrial Engineering
“Industrial Engineering (I. .) is concerned with
the design, improvement and installation of
integrated system of people, materials, equipment
and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge
and skill in the mathematical, physical and social
sciences together with the principles and methods of
engineering analysis and design to specify, predict
and valuate the results to be obtained from such
systems.” A. I. I. E. Definition 1

 Products and services
 Processes and technologies
 Facilities
 Managing the supply chain
 Forecasting demand for products

 Production planning and scheduling
 Ensuring quality

4
Some Typical Operations Management
Decisions

 How much will we sell?

 How do we measure quality?
 Which product do we offer?
 How to produce good/provide
service?
 Where do we locate our facility?
 Is subcontracting a good idea?
 How much inventory should we keep?
5
WHAT IS PRODUCTION AND
OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT ?
 Production and Operations Management (POM) is
the management of an organization’s production
system, which converts inputs into the
organization’s products and services.

 A production system takes inputs - raw materials,

personnel, machines, buildings, technology,
cash, and other resources - and converts them
into outputs - products and services. This
conversion process is the heart of what is called
production and is the predominant activity of a
production system. Managers in POM, whom
simply called operations managers, manage the
production system and their primary concern is
with the activities of the conversion process or
production.
