Power Theft Detection Seminar

This document describes a system for detecting power theft using GSM technology. It begins with an introduction to the problem of power theft in developing countries and its significant economic impacts. It then discusses common methods of power theft including tampering with meters and transformers. The document proposes a system that uses sensors to detect theft and bypassing of meters, and transmits alerts via GSM modem to the utility. If instructed by an authorized user, it can also remotely cut power supply. Block diagrams and flow charts are provided to illustrate the system design. In conclusion, the document states that implementing such techniques could help curb power theft and boost the economy.

INTRODUCTION

 Many developing countries confront widespread theft of electricity from

government owned power utilities.
 Technical & non technical losses occurs only in transmission &
distribution. It is very difficult to find non technical losses occurring in the
system.
Electricity theft is at the centre of focus all over the world. But Electricity
theft in India has a significant effect in the Indian economy, considerably
high.
The following sections will describe the proposed detection and control
system for illegal electricity usage using power lines.
HOW POWER THEFT
AFFECTS OUR ECONOMY???
Due to theft of power there are so many problems
facing by our Indian government not only India but
also the world.
 We are losing $20 billion dollars every day .Hence
India losses $12 billion dollars every year.
 In India alone we can recover nearly or
approximately 10% of non technical losses can able to
conserve 93000 Gwh power annually.
 India losses more money to theft than any other
country . India were in the highest place followed by
Brazil and Russia .
 Ultimately it greatly affects our GDP and great fall
back our Indian economy
WHAT IS POWER THEFT???

Power theft is the criminal practice of stealing

electrical power.
It is a crime and is punishable by fines and/or
incarceration.
It belons to the non-technical losses.
It is the use of electrical power without any
authorization from supplier with total or partial by
passing metering system.
MAJOR CAUSES FOR
POWER THEFT

Absence of accountability
Inadequate and ineffective enforcement of
law
Political protection to employees and
influential customers.
Customer attitude
POWER THEFT METHODS
• METERS:
 Tampering with meters and scales
 Bypassing the meters
 Damaging or removing meters
TRANSFORMERS:
 Illegal terminal taps of overhead lines on the low voltage side of the
transformer.
• WIRES/CABLES:
 Illegal tapping of bare wires or underground cables.

BILLING IRREGULARITIES:
 By meter readers
UNPAID BILLS:
 By Individuals, Government Institutions and “Untouchable” VIPs
FEW OTHER WAYS OF
POWER THEFT
 Use of single phase supply from three phase supply.
 Disconnected neutral from both the ends.
 Used earth/separate neutral for both ends.
 Connecting phase voltage to neutral of used single phase
supply. Potential difference w.r.t neutral of used single
phase supply is zero . Hence power product of voltage and
current will be zero.
 Isolating neutral from both ends.
Technical Solutions

 Electronic tamper detection meter

Pre payment meters

Plastic meter encasements

Anti theft cable

Using GSM

Using PLCs
Anti-theft cable
 It is a coaxial (or concentric) cables
NON TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS

FINANCIAL REWARDS

PERIODIC CHECKS

ENFORCEMENT LAW
POWER THEFT DETECTION USING
GSM
 In this system, GSM technology used to transmit the meter
reading to the customer and government with the required cost.
This process will be happen when needed that means if SMS is
received from authorized server mobile transmission between
customer and government.
Then the energy theft controlled by IR sensor, Bypass detection.
It also cut the power supply automatically as per request of
authorized server mobile.
Block Diagram
STEAL TAMPERING CIRCUIT
• If the person theft the power in energy meter like, if he remove the
seal which on energy meter then IR sensor will send the signal to PIC
microcontroller then it will send the message to substation controller
mobile through GSM modem

BY PASS DETECTION
CIRCUIT
If the person use a the power without connecting to energy meter,
that means if he is bypassing the connection in energy meter without
any reading in energy meter the person use power in houses at time our
circuit send a message to substation controller through GSM with help
of PIC controller and cut the power supply automatically by using relay.
POWER MEASUREMENT UNIT

• In the power measurement unit , the one CT is used

to measure total current used and measuring total
current used and measuring voltage ,we use bridge
of diode for converting AC to DC and then voltage
divider circuit reduce voltage level at measurable
scale.
GSM Modem

 GSM modem-Max 232 is built with dual band

GSM engine – SIM 900A. As mentioned in the
above sensing circuit there is power theft the it
will send message to microcontroller as per the
program and it will send message to GSM through
Max 232.Also if mobile recevied SMS from
authorized mobile phone to cut the supply, then
supply is off by using relay
 Install this setup at load side of the transformer as
well as home to prevent the “electricity stolen
directly from transmission lines”
 By comparing the both power usage of
transmission as well as home
Flow Chart
Conclusion

 By using techniques, above the crime of stealing power

may be brought to an end and thereby a new bloom may
be expected in the economy of our motherland and also
there will be less scarcity for power utilisation.
