1. Describe the difference between training and development. Why might both be
needed?
Training
- Learning process in which employees get an opportunity to develop skill,
competency and knowledge as per the job requirement
- It is relatively short term
- It focuses in present needs
- It is specifically Job related and Job oriented
Development
- Educational process which is concerned with the overall growth of the employees
- It is relatively long-term
- It focuses on future needs
- It is conceptual, and mostly career oriented
Both are required as Training is necessary for acquiring skills on a short-term period
to fulfill upcoming needs whereas Development is important for long-term career
growth which in turn help achieve organizational goals.
2. Explain why colleague retention is important to ASDA.
Retention is important to ASDA for the following reasons:
- Team Performance
ASDA believes that by training and development, employees can be retained
which results in better performing and productive teams.
- Greater Customer Satisfaction
Better trained and skilled employees will be retained which will result in
better customer satisfaction. This is in turn beneficial for the ASDA.
- Internal Promotions
ASDA aims to fulfill most appointments through internal promotions. This
shows they look to retain employees and are more interested in choosing
future leaders from within the company rather than outside the company.
This is also beneficial for promoting the cultural values of the company.
3 Use the ASDA colleagues’ profiles to analyse why training and development adds
value to the business.
Following are some ASDA Colleagues, their profiles and how they were able to add
value to the business by Training and Development.

and also made them able to lead a group with individuals with different
backgrounds.
4 Evaluate the various methods that ASDA uses in its training and development
programme. Judge why it uses so many, giving reasons for your answer.
ASDA utilizes the following methods in its Training & Development program. These
include both On-the-Job and Off-the-Job training:
- On-the-Job training includes activities like fulfilling their ROM’s duties in their
absence, attending meetings on their behalf and receiving mentorship from a
Senior Manager. On-the-Job training accounts for 80% of their development and is
a pivotal part of their career growth.
- Off-the-job training includes external coaching programs like
- Being at my best: Focuses on emotional intelligence
- Multi-Site Coaching: Focuses on development of coaching styles
- Influencing across the Business: Focuses in effective communication skills
- Thought Leadership: Focuses on developing various aspects of leadership
- ASDA uses many modes of T&D for its employees, so that they can be developed
at all levels and are able to transition to senior leadership roles.
